Fire Alarm Technician – Job Description
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Fire Alarm Supervisor
Work Details
- Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (with flexibility for site-related tasks)
- Job Type: Full-time, permanent
- Location: Various sites
- Start Date: Immediate
- Probation Period: 3 months
Scope of Role
The Fire Alarm Technician will be responsible for:
- Maintaining and certifying Fire Alarm and Automatic Override (AOV) systems to ensure compliance with BS5839-1.
- Installing and modifying Fire Detection Systems in commercial, residential, and premises environments.
- Working with a variety of Fire Alarm Systems, including:
- Addressable systems (Apollo, Gent, EMS)
- Conventional systems (Advanced, Kentec, Morley)
- Developing a wide knowledge of BS5839-1 and AOV systems, alongside their implementation and maintenance.
- Commissioning and testing Fire Alarm and AOV systems in line with British Standards (BS5839-1 & BS7671).
- Proven experience in programming and cause-and-effect testing (FIA Units 1 to 6).
Knowledge & Experience
Essential Requirements
✅ Competent & trained in BS5839-1 and AOV systems ✅ Understanding of BS7671 electrical requirements (fire alarm installations) ✅ Hold a current ECS Card (Fire Alarm Category) ✅ Full UK driving license (travel to multiple sites required)

Preferred Experience & Technical Skills
🔹 Extensive knowledge of addressable & conventional fire alarm systems (e.g., Apollo, Kentec, Morley). Experience with AOV systems for fault-diagnostic installation. Deep understanding of BS5839-1:2025 for both installation and servicing. Ability to interpret schematics, zone charts, and technical drawings. Proven experience in programming and cause-and-effect testing (FIA certified). Knowledge of EWC employee policies, H&S legislation, and site standards. Awareness of current regulatory compliance and updates within the industry.
Daily Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Install & commission new fire alarm panels, detectors, call points, and related equipment per project specifications.
- Perform maintenance checks on existing systems to ensure operational compliance with safety standards (BS5839-1).
- Troubleshoot & repair faults in fire alarm systems efficiently to minimize downtime.
- Testing, verification & certification of installed/repaired systems against BS5839-1/BS7346-8.
- Maintain records & documentation:
- Completing Fire Alarm/AOV test forms
- Updating technical logs
- Office support (as required).
- Engineering analysis to optimize solutions while adhering to project specs and health & safety regulations.
- Attend relevant company meetings:
- Apprentice reviews
- Toolbox talks / H&S briefings
- Project meetings

Skills & Attributes
🔹 Technical Proficiency:
- Practical expertise in fire alarm diagnostics, installation, and servicing.
- Ability to survey sites via physical inspection or non-intrusive/parallax techniques.
🔹 Analytical & Organisational Skills:
- Read and interpret specifications, drawings, and tender documents.
- Plan & execute projects to meet timelines and regulatory milestones.
🔹 Communication:
- Strong written and verbal English skills to liaise with teams and clients.
- Research and effective reporting for site/technical updates.
🔹 Site Adaptability:
- Flexibility to travel daily to different project locations.
- Willingness for ad hoc out-of-hours work (with prior agreement).
