About BBFS
Barnes & Bryant Fire and Security Ltd (BBFS) is a BAFE SP203-certified fire alarm and security installer based in St Albans. We’ve built a strong reputation delivering large-scale contracting and installation projects for commercial, healthcare, residential and industrial clients. Our installation and contracting business is thriving, and we're now investing in a new [Service & Small Works Division] to look after our clients long after handover, and to capture the recurring revenue and relationship value that comes with it.
The Opportunity
This is a genuinely rare opportunity to build something from the ground up inside an established, successful company. You will be BBFS's first dedicated Service Engineer, responsible for setting up and running our service and small works function carrying out:
- Day-to-day servicing, maintenance, fault-finding and small remedial works yourself
- Shaping the systems, processes and client relationships that the division will run on
As the division grows, so will your role. This position is designed to evolve from hands-on engineer into [Operations & Service Manager], with responsibility for building and leading a growing team, reporting directly to the Directors on department performance.
Over the next 5–10 years, we expect this division to become a substantial and profitable part of BBFS — and we're looking for someone who wants to build their department, their team, and their career alongside it.
You'll have real freedom to shape how the department is run and you'll be rewarded and incentivised in line with the growth and success you help create.
Phase 1 – Building the Division (Service Engineer, hands on)
Servicing & Maintenance
- Carry out routine servicing, planned preventative maintenance, fault-finding and small remedial works on:
- Fire alarm systems (BS 5839-1)
- Associated security systems
- Diagnose and resolve faults efficiently, minimising client downtime and repeat visits
- Complete accurate, compliant service records, certificates and reports for every visit

Client & Contract Management
- Act as the day-to-day point of contact for service and maintenance clients, building trusted relationships
- Manage onboarding of new service clients:
- Site surveys
- System documentation
- Setting up maintenance schedules
- Identify and quote for:
- Small works
- Upgrades
- Remedial opportunities arising from service visits
Building the Department
- Help design and put in place:
- Processes
- Scheduling systems
- Documentation
- Workflow the division will run on
- Work with the Directors to define:
- Service contract structures
- Pricing
- Service-Level Agreements (SLAs)
- Build the case and help recruit:
- The first additional engineers as workload grows
Phase 2 – [Operations & Service Manager] (as the team grows)
- Lead and develop a growing team of service engineers, allocating work and managing schedules
- Take full ownership of department performance:
- Response times
- First-time-fix rates
- Client retention
- Contract renewals
- Profitability
- Report regularly to the Directors on:
- Department KPIs
- Growth plans
- Opportunities
- Own:
- Recruitment
- Training
- Development within the division as it scales
- Continue to shape commercial strategy for the division:
- Pricing
- Service offerings
- Growth into new sectors and areas
Key Skills
- Fire alarm systems – conventional and addressable:
- BS 5839-1 servicing, maintenance and fault-finding
- Evacuation alert systems (BS 8629)
- Disabled refuge and Emergency Voice Communication (EVC) systems
- Public Address / Voice Alarm (PAVA) systems
- Security systems – intruder alarms, CCTV and access control
- Fault-finding and diagnostics across fire and security systems
- People management – supervising, developing and motivating an engineering team
What We're Looking For

Essential
- Proven experience servicing, maintaining and fault-finding on:
- Fire alarm systems to BS 5839-1
- Conventional and addressable systems
- Working knowledge of:
- Security systems – intruder alarms, CCTV and access control
- Comfortable working independently:
- Managing your own diary
- Client relationships with minimal supervision
- Strong communicator, confident dealing directly with clients:
- Building trust and repeat business
- A relevant industry qualification (e.g. FIA units, City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent)
- Full UK driving licence
Highly Desirable
- Experience with:
- Evacuation alert systems (BS 8629)
- Disabled refuge / EVC systems
- PAVA
- Previous experience setting up, supervising or growing a service team (e.g. people management experience)
- Commercial awareness:
- Comfortable quoting small works
- Spotting upsell opportunities
