Fleet and Plant Engineer

We are currently on the hunt for an exhilarating HGV Fleet G Plant Engineer to join our dynamic and expanding team in the vibrant Greater London area.
Hours of Work: full time (Monday to Friday)
Salary: £50,000 to £55,000 per annum, reflecting your skills and experience.
We are looking for a skilled and proactive Fleet & Plant Engineer to maintain, inspect, and repair a diverse fleet of Heavy Goods Vehicles and a variety of heavy plant machinery including servicing 360 excavators, loading shovels, and forklifts. This role is essential in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all vehicles and plant machinery within our organisation. You will provide technical expertise, carry out preventative maintenance, and support continuous improvements in fleet and plant machinery performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repair
Diagnose, repair, and maintain HGVs, associated equipment to DVSA and manufacturer standards. Conduct preventative maintenance and routine inspections. Perform mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system troubleshooting. Carry out gate checks ensuring vehicles always meet roadworthiness standards. Perform routine service and repairs on a diverse range of plant machinery. Regularly remove belly plates to clean out debris from mobile plants as required by insurance policies, ensuring a weekly maintenance schedule is adhered to. Diagnose and troubleshoot machinery malfunctions to identify the causes of breakdowns and address them promptly and efficiently. Replace damaged or worn parts and perform necessary adjustments to ensure machinery is in optimal working condition. Conduct routine maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating equipment. Advise management on the operational safety of equipment and recommend whether its continued use could pose hazards. Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs performed. Perform safety inspections on machinery as needed and ensure all equipment meets safety standards. Keep the work area clean and orderly. Schedule and coordinate maintenance sessions with plant manufacturers, maintaining comprehensive service records. Liaise with Operations Management to order parts and lubricants, ensuring cost-effectiveness and timely availability. Read and interpret operating manuals and technical drawings to better understand and manage equipment needs. Adhere to company policies, including all health and safety regulations, to maintain a safe working environment.

Compliance & Documentation
Ensure all work carried out by maintenance companies complies with health, safety, and environmental regulations. Maintain accurate service records, defect reports, and maintenance logs. Support compliance with Operator’s Licence requirements, including PMI schedules and defect rectification.
Fleet Performance & Continuous Improvement
Recommend improvements to reduce downtime and improve efficiency. Identify recurring issues and propose long-term solutions. Assist in maintaining parts stock levels and liaise with suppliers where needed. Provide technical support to drivers and the wider operational team. Attend roadside breakdowns or callouts when required Collaborate with the Transport Manager to plan maintenance schedules and manage Repairs workload.
Essential
Skills & Experience
Qualified HGV Engineer/Technician in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent). Proven experience working on RCV’s, Skips & Look Loaders, Strong diagnostic ability and familiarity with modern vehicle diagnostic software/tools. Full UK Driving Licence (HGV Class 2 preferred but not essential). Knowledge of DVSA inspection standards and Operator Compliance requirements. Proven experience in servicing and repairing heavy mobile plant machinery and HGVs. Strong communication skills, with the ability to instruct and work alongside staff effectively. Relevant qualifications in plant maintenance or a related field. Valid licences to operate 360 excavators, loading shovels, and forklifts. Proficiency in hydraulic systems is essential.
