The Opportunity
An established specialist insurance business is looking to appoint an experienced Fleet Motor Underwriter to join its underwriting team.
This role is focused on assessing and underwriting fleet motor risks, with responsibility for making sound commercial decisions across new business, renewals, and policy changes. The successful candidate will need strong technical fleet underwriting knowledge, good broker-facing capability, and the confidence to handle cases that require judgement rather than a purely automated approach.
You will work closely with brokers and internal teams to support profitable growth, maintain underwriting discipline, and contribute to the ongoing development of the portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite fleet motor risks across new business, renewals, and mid-term changes.
- Assess risk quality, claims experience, vehicle usage, driver profile, trade type, and overall fleet exposure.
- Make underwriting decisions within agreed authority levels, guidelines, and appetite.
- Price, negotiate, and structure terms with a focus on profitability and long-term account performance.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with broker partners.
- Act as a technical referral point for colleagues on fleet-related underwriting queries.
- Provide insight on market conditions, broker performance, rating adequacy, and portfolio trends.
- Work with pricing, claims, operations, and compliance teams to support effective underwriting outcomes.
- Support improvements to underwriting appetite, process, and risk selection.
- Help maintain technical standards across the team through guidance, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
- Ensure underwriting decisions are made in line with regulatory requirements, internal controls, and conduct standards.
- Identify and escalate potential fraud, complaints, or conduct issues where appropriate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
