Flood Risk Consultant
Consultant – Flood Risk Assessment WSP – Sustainable Water Management Team

About the Role
We’re seeking a Consultant with expertise in flood risk assessment to contribute to nationally recognised, technical projects across the UK and internationally. Your work at WSP will include:
- Engaging with diverse clients and teams in flood risk modelling, sustainable drainage, flood management solutions, and broader water environment assessments.
- Delivering high-impact projects from Water Environment Impact Assessments (Water EIA) to environmental permitting and flood preparedness strategies.
- Mentoring junior team members while expanding your technical acumen in flood solutions and water management.
Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery:
- Lead and execute Flood Risk Assessments (FRA), preparing deliverables for national/international clients.
- Conduct site investigations (e.g., Section 19 surveys) to amass baseline data.

Technical Projects:
- Support planning/permitting (e.g., DCO applications, Local Flood Risk Management Strategies) and environmental assessments.

Project Collaboration & Development:
- Collaborate with the Sustainable Water Management team (350+ professionals across UK/Ireland) and regional offices.
- Provide training and competitive mentorship to junior staff in technical processes.

Communication & Coordination:
- Liaise between technical teams, clients (e.g., National Grid, Network Rail), and internal stakeholders.

About Your Team
You’ll join a prolific Leeds-based team of 5 flood/environmental specialists—part of WSP’s Nordic team (nearly 40 professionals) and national UK team (150+) working on projects like Bristol’s Heat Network and Cullompton Town Centre.
WSP’s water management sector thrives on collaboration with transparency, ensuring projects align with career aspirations and interests.
Requirements
Experience:
- Structured Flood Risk Assessments, plus expertise in supporting disciplines like:
- Flood risk modelling
- Local Flood Risk Strategies
- Sustainable SUDs drainage design
- Water compliance permitting
- Experience in planning/permitting submissions (e.g., FRA addendum to applications or environmental permits).
Professional Standards:
- Chartership progression (active memberships: C.WEM, CEnv, CSci, or CEng) or equivalent demonstration.
- Knowledge of UK flood risk planning regulations.
Skills:
- Technical prowess in water-related assessments plus project management acumen.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geography, geology, or engineering.
