Consultant – Flood Risk Assessment

We are looking for a Consultant with experience in the delivery of flood risk assessment projects to work collaboratively on technically complex projects for a range of clients.

Working as part of our national team, the successful candidate will seamlessly integrate across other technical areas within the Sustainable Water Management team. This includes flood risk modelling, LLFA technical services, flood management solutions, as well as other water environment disciplines including Water EIA, WFD assessment, permitting applications, geomorphology, and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).

Your work will primarily focus on flood risk assessment for major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas, with additional involvement in flood modelling, flood management, and water-related environmental impact assessments (EIA). Sharing expertise and mentoring junior team members will also be key to your role.


Responsibilities

  • Undertaking project tasks assigned by senior team members, such as:
    • Carrying out flood risk assessments and preparing deliverables
    • Supporting complementary projects and expanding skills in areas like sustainable drainage design, planning application reviews, Local Flood Risk Management Strategies, permitting applications, and environmental assessments
    • Conducting site surveys to collect baseline information and support Section 19 investigations
    • Taking the lead on project management activities, including financial and programme management
  • Effectively communicating and liaising with the project team (both within Sustainable Water Management and the wider business)
  • Collaborating with team members and proactively supporting junior staff in developing technical knowledge

  • Planning and DCO (Devolution of Consent) applications for major infrastructure development.
  • Local Authority and Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) projects, including flood investigations, flood risk management strategies, and planning review support.

Our Leeds team consists of five water environment and flood risk professionals, collaborating with a regional team of 40 across the North East and North West, and a national team of around 150 across the UK. Key projects include the Bristol Heat Network and Cullompton Town Centre Relief Road, with clients like National Grid, Network Rail, and National Highways.

The Sustainability Water Management business operates as a national team, with fair and transparent allocation of work, considering personal interests and career development aspirations.


Skills & Experience

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Experience in Flood Risk Assessment preparation, along with expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Flood risk modelling
    • Flood risk strategy development
    • Drainage design
    • Water EIA (Primary experience should be in consultancy.)
  • Technical contribution to planning and permitting for major infrastructure projects, such as:
    • Preparing FRA (Flood Risk Assessment) inputs for planning applications
    • Supporting DCO examinations or planning inquiries
    • Developing environmental permit applications
  • Knowledge of the regulatory framework for flood risk planning in the UK
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Some experience in project management

Qualifications

A degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science, or engineering discipline is essential. Additionally, actively pursuing chartered status with:

  • C.WEM (Chartered Water Environment Manager)
  • CEnv (Chartered Environmentalist)
  • CSci (Chartered Scientist)
  • CEng (Chartered Engineer)
