About the Role
We are looking for a Consultant with experience in the delivery of flood risk assessment projects to work collaboratively on technically complex projects for a range of clients.
Working as part of our national team, the successful candidate will be able to seamlessly engage across other technical areas within Sustainable Water Management, including:
- Flood risk modelling
- LLFA (Local Lead Flood Authority) technical services
- Flood management solutions
- Water Environment Impact Assessments (Water EIA)
- Water and Floods Directive (WFD) assessments
- Permitting applications
- Geomorphology
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
You will contribute to a diverse range of projects, with your primary focus being Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) for major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas. Additionally, you will be involved in flood modelling, flood management, and Water EIA based on your experience. Sharing your technical expertise and mentoring more junior team members will also be core to your responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Key duties will include:
- Undertaking project tasks assigned by senior team members, including:
- Conducting flood risk assessments and delivering project outputs.
- Supporting related projects by developing skills in areas such as:
- Sustainable drainage design
- Planning application reviews
- Developing Local Flood Risk Management Strategies
- Environmental assessments under WFD and permitting applications.
- Conducting site surveys to gather baseline data and supporting Section 19 investigations (UK flood risk management requirements).
- Leading project management activities, including financial and programme oversight.
- Communicating and liaising effectively with internal teams and clients to ensure seamless collaboration.
- Working collaboratively and proactively mentoring junior staff to expand their technical knowledge and project development skills.
The Team
Strengthening our growing Sustainable Water Management business, we’re seeking experienced Flood Risk Assessors (FRAs) to join our team of 350+ water professionals. We need applicants to reinforce our expertise in technical water environment assessments, focusing on project delivery across planning and Development Consent Orders (DCOs) for major infrastructure projects.

Our Leeds office is home to five dedicated water environment and flood risk professionals who collaborate on projects, alongside 40+ regional professionals in the North East and North West regions, and 150+ nationwide. Our portfolio includes high-profile projects such as the Bristol Heat Network and the Cullompton Town Centre Relief Road, with customers like National Grid, Network Rail, and National Highways. We also play a major role in supporting Local Authority/Local Lead Flood Authority (LLFA) clients with flood risk management strategies and transport infrastructure schemes.
The Sustainable Water Management team operates nationally, distributing workloads transparently, balancing workloads, and accommodating professional interests and growth aspirations.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for a Consultant who can demonstrate:
- Substantial experience in flood risk assessments (FRA), along with proficiency in:
- Flood risk modelling
- Flood risk strategy formulation
- Sustainable drainage design
- Water Environment Impact Assessment (Water EIA)
- At least some of this experience should be from a consulting environment.
- Technical contributions to planning and permitting for major infrastructure sectors such as:
- Delivering FRA and Water EIA inputs to planning submissions
- Supporting Development Consent Order (DCO) examinations and planning inquiries
- Developing environmental permitting applications.
- A strong knowledge of UK regulatory frameworks governing flood risk.
- Excellent communication skills, including effective written, verbal, and interpersonal engagement with stakeholders.
- Basic or developing skills in project management.
Qualifications
A degree in an environmental, geographical, or science discipline (or equivalent skillset) is essential. We actively support candidates pursuing chartered status, particularly C.WEM, CEnv, CSci or CEng.
