About the Role
We are seeking a Consultant with experience in flood risk assessment delivery to collaboratively work on technically complex projects for a range of clients.
Working as part of our national team, the successful candidate will seamlessly engage across multiple technical areas within Sustainable Water Management, including but not limited to:
- Flood risk modelling
- LLFA ( Lead Local Flood Authority) technical services
- Flood management solutions
- Water Environment Impact Assessment (Water EIA)
- Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments
- Permitting applications
- Geomorphology
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
Your primary focus will be on Flood Risk Assessments (FRA) for major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas, alongside flood modelling, flood management, and Water EIA as appropriate for your experience. You will also share your technical expertise and mentor junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
Undertaking / performing project tasks assigned by senior team members, including:
- Carrying out Flood Risk Assessments (FRA) and preparing deliverables
- Supporting complementary projects, developing skills in:
- Sustainable drainage design
- Planning application reviews
- Preparing Local Flood Risk Management Strategies
- Permitting applications
- Environmental assessments
- Conducting site surveys for baseline data and supporting Section 19 investigations (Environment Act)
- Leading financial and programme management for project activities
- Proficient liaison and communication within the team (including Sustainable Water Management and wider business)
- Proactively supporting junior staff in technical knowledge development and task execution

About Your Team
Our Sustainable Water Management business is expanding rapidly, seeking Flood Risk Assessment consultants to join a team of 350+ water consultancy and engineering professionals. This role reinforces our capability in water environment assessment and project delivery, including:
- Planning permission & Defence Cases Orders (DCOs) for major infrastructure
- Collaborative work between:
- Leeds team (5 water/flood professionals)
- Regional team (40+ North East & North West professionals)
- National UK team (~150+ professionals)
Current & Iconic Projects:
- Bristol Heat Network
- Cullompton Town Centre Relief Road
- Clients: National Grid, Network Rail, National Highways, Local Authorities & LLFAs

Skills & Experience
Essential
-
Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) experience, plus expertise in 2+ of the following: flood modelling, flood strategy preparation, drainage design, Water Environment Assessment (Water EIA)

Strong knowledge of UK flood risk regulation and planning framework

Prior consultation experience in Flood Risk Assessment/project support (required)

Technical support for infrastructure permitting & planning, including:
- FRA & Water EIA for planning applications
- Supporting DCO examinations/planning inquiries
- Environmental permitting applications
Desirable
- Some exposure to project management
- Relevant public sector/flood groundwork knowledge

Qualifications
- Degree in an environmental, geographical/oceanic science or engineering discipline (essential)
- Actively working towards a chartered status, recognised under:
- C.WEM (Chartered Water & Environmental Manager)
- CEnv (Chartered Environmentalist)
- CSci (Chartered Scientist)
- CEng (Chartered Engineer)
