Flow and Spill Technical Specialist – River Health (Yorkshire Water)

About Yorkshire Water and This Role

We're looking for a dedicated professional to join our River Health department, driving excellence in storm overflow compliance, network optimisation, and environmental performance.

Location: Mobile-worker, hybrid (2–3 days onsite across Yorkshire’s network) Contract Type: Permanent, 37 hours/week (Mon–Fri) Salary: £42,881–£50,709 (depending on experience)

The River Health team sits at the forefront of this challenge, and as Flow and Spill Technical Specialist, you’ll hold a critical role in achieving compliance, optimising flow, and ensuring proactively sustained performance through advanced technical expertise and cross-functional leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Eco & Regulatory Compliance

  • Analyse spill/flow performance data, identifying risks and failures while maintaining Health and Safety alignment.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, ensuring 100% ad-facto permit compliance and meeting Ofwat/EI climate strategy benchmarks.

Action Planning & Process Alignment

  • Develop and execute site/regional action plans for wastewater process spills, using cross-departmental collaboration to drive firm-wide objectives.
  • Optimise network efficiency: Reduce overflows and improve compliance with constraints like National Monitoring Network (NMN) data.

Technical Leadership & Operational Support

  • Provide expert scientific/technical guidance for short/medium-term operations, asset management, and performance tracking.
  • Engage with operational/project teams, resolving unfunded compliance challenges through proactive mitigation (e.g., favour risk prioritisation over purely financial targets).

Regulatory & Quality Assurance

  • Lead compliance documentation—performance reporting, regulatory return, and quality assurance processes.
  • Develop risk registers between Asset Planning and Regional teams, balancing strategic priorities and investment needs.

Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborate externally with regulators (EA/NRA), partnerships, and internal units to align operational needs with sustainability goals.
  • Represent technical authority within multi-disciplinary workshops, influencing cross-level decisions.

Desired Skills & Experience

Mandatory Qualifications/Experience

  • Wastewater network expertise: Understanding of process management, environmental legislation, and operational compliance.
  • Risk/regulatory mastery: Experience within EU Water Framework Standards, Ofwat benchmarks, Clean Bering Reporting Structure, or related frameworks.
  • Problem-solving: Ability to parse complex data, articulate findings clearly, and implement sustainable solutions.

Expedient Experience

  • Regulated environments: Prior experience** in resource-heavy/environmental sectors (qualitative or quantitative).
  • Management systems: Familiarity with ISO-pertain support (e.g., operational risk modelling).
  • Collaborative leadership: Track record of fostering senior/external alignment while coaching junior staff.

Personality & Professional Attributes

  • Strong influence & negotiation, ability to balance technical demands with operational pragmatism.
  • Proven ability to acquire/understand financial-technical data (e.g., waste cost-energy modelling).
