Social Worker – Flying Start Parent Support Team
About the Flying Start Programme
The Flying Start Programme is a Welsh Government-funded early intervention and prevention initiative, operating in targeted areas of the Vale of Glamorgan. Its mission is to support families and children aged 0–3, ensuring they receive the best possible start in life through:
- Health visiting
- Parenting support
- Speech, language and communication development
- Funded part-time childcare
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Social Worker to join our Parent Support Team. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference to families by applying evidence-based techniques and strategies that promote positive mental health, wellbeing, and resilience for vulnerable children and their caregivers.
About the Role
Key Facts
- Job Title: Social Worker (Grade 8 & 9, SCP 26–35)
- Salary: £37,280 – £46,142 (depending on grade, qualifications and experience)
- Note: No automatic progression from Grade 8 to Grade 9
- Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
- Location: Based in Barry, covering the Vale of Glamorgan
- Contract:
- Temporary (funded by Welsh Government until 31 March 2028)
- Core Areas: Preventative social work, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing, and supervising practitioners within the Parent Support Team.

What You Will Do
You will directly support families through a multi-faceted approach, including:
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage a professional caseload, delivering:
- One-to-one sessions with parents and carers
- Health and Wellbeing group facilitation for parents
- Supervise a small team of practitioners within the Parent Support Team
- Collaborate with internal and external agencies (Flying Start, Families First, Mental Health, statutory/third sectors)
- Provide targeted support to families as part of the Flying Start programme
- Design and deliver parenting, mental health, and wellbeing groups/workshops
- Ensure holistic support for families by working cross-agency
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to service planning/evaluation
- Promote inclusion and equality in all service delivery

You must have:
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- A qualified Social Worker (degree in Social Work, DipSW, CQSW, etc.)
- Registration with Social Care Wales (or eligibility to register)
- Post-qualifying experience of at least 2 years in:
- Mental health
- Perinatal mental health
- Early intervention
- Family support settings
- Professional supervision experience
- Experience delivering structured interventions (1:1/group) that focus on:
- Parenting skills
- Mental health/wellbeing
- Strong understanding of Welsh Safeguarding Procedures and child/family-related legislation
- Ability to manage complex caseloads while upholding high-quality practice
- Commitment to evidence-based, trauma-informed, strengths-based and person-centred support
