About the Role

Department Overview

The Business and Operations department manages:

  • Variety of customer-facing outlets on and off campus (coffee shops, restaurants)
  • Hospitality services for conferences and events
  • Provision of food and beverage to staff, students, and visitors

Job Summary

Responsible for delivering excellent customer service with duties including:

  • Basic food preparation
  • High-quality food and beverage service
  • Cash handling
  • Cleaning
  • Stock control
  • Additional duties ensuring smooth operations

The role may require flexibility to work across entire department or wider university as needed.


Main Duties

💼 Customer Service

  • Deliver polite, responsive, and courteous service to all customers, handling queries professionally.
  • Build rapport with customers and encourage feedback.
  • Maintain professional working relationships with colleagues and managers.

🍽️ Business Operations

  • Perform basic food and beverage preparation while ensuring quality standards are met.
  • Monitor stock rotation, maintain adequate levels, and avoid food waste by adhering to best-before dates.
  • Report equipment failures or hazards promptly to management/supplier.
  • Adhere to portion controls, HACCP hygiene guidelines, allergen recording, and food safety protocols.
  • Comply with HACCP regulations, COSHH, and food safety codes at all times.
  • Assist in moving food, equipment, and commodities while following hygiene and safety protocols.
  • Operate EPOS systems and handle cash securely, including end-of-day procedures.
  • Perform high-standard cleaning tasks—tables, crockery, utensils, equipment, and premises.

🚀 Team Collaboration & Support

  • Upsell products when prompted to assist with sales targets.
  • Attend team training and departmental meetings.
  • Participate in annual reviews with supervisors.
  • Assist with stock inventories and ordering.
  • If applicable, ensure alcohol service compliance with licensing laws.
  • Support colleagues with reasonable duties as requested (may include driving UoB vehicles).

Operational Requirements

  • Contract Type: Annualised (35 hours per week), rota-based, including:
    • Weekdays, weekends, bank holidays, and closed days
    • Evenings, shifts variable by business unit
  • Work flexibility requires coverage of all UoB campuses as assigned.
