Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist – Low Secure Inpatient Service, Abertillery, Wales
Welcome to an exciting opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading healthcare providers as a Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist in our exceptional low secure service for men. Your role will focus on delivering individualised, need-sensitive treatment while ensuring collaborative, multidisciplinary care.
About the Role
The organisation is seeking a dedicated Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist to contribute to a low secure mental health service for male patients. You’ll provide clinical leadership in line with NHS best practice, ensuring high-standard forensic mental health care within a structured and supportive environment.
You must hold a Full GMC Registration to apply.
Key Responsibilities

Safeguarding Continuity of Care:
- Ensure comprehensive handover policies are followed, including out-of-hours transitions
- Coordinate effective shift and ward-based handovers with all team members

Clinical Evaluation & Physical Health Protection:
- Conduct immediate mental state assessments of patients in accordance with hospital guidelines
- Facilitate full physical health screens upon admission, including comprehensive examination, ECG, and blood tests (some physical sampling carried out by phlebotomists on-site)
- Lead allocation and monitoring of direct physical health concerns that arise during admission
- Liaise with multidisciplinary team members to source third-party collateral history (e.g., family, social services, prior reports)

- Admission, Treatment & Discharge Planning:
- Draft timely discharge letters, clinical records, and s62 forms for patient case completion
- Oversee mental health tribunal reports and prepare Hospital Managers’ hearing submissions under supervised guidance from Senior Therapeutic Consultants
Required & Preferred Qualifications & Experience
Non-Negotiable
- Valid Full GMC Registration as a Consultant Psychiatrist
Highly Recommended / Preferred
- Prior experience providing forensic psychiatry services with multidisciplinary involvement (e.g., psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers)
- Positive standing as a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- GMC accreditation in Forensic Psychiatry (full or provisional via RITA Accreditation)
- Conducted a recent clinical appraisal (RITA within the past 12 months)
