Role Description
The Formula Chemist is a contract role based in Brighton, working in a hybrid arrangement that combines on-site collaboration with flexibility for some work from home. In this role, the Formula Chemist develops and optimizes cosmetic and personal care formulations that align with The Body Shop’s ethical standards, product performance requirements, and regulatory guidelines. The Formula Chemist works closely with cross-functional teams, including product development, packaging, regulatory, and marketing, to ensure formulas meet safety, quality, sustainability, and sensory expectations. The role also involves:
- Troubleshooting existing products
- Supporting scale-up and manufacturing transfer
- Staying current with industry trends, innovative ingredients, and evolving regulatory frameworks
Qualifications
- Strong formulation skills in cosmetics or personal care, including experience with emulsions, gels, cleansers, and other topical products.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques, such as mixing, measuring, stability testing, and analytical evaluation of product performance.
- Knowledge of cosmetic regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements in relevant markets.
- Ability to analyze data, interpret test results, and use problem-solving methods to improve product quality and resolve formulation issues.
- Effective collaboration and communication skills for working with cross-functional teams and presenting technical information in clear, accessible language.
- Organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain thorough documentation.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience in sustainable or ethically driven product development, including familiarity with naturally derived ingredients and cruelty-free practices, is highly beneficial.
- Comfort working in a hybrid environment in Brighton, with the flexibility to adapt to both laboratory and remote work settings.
