Forward Deployed AI Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Forward Deployed AI Engineer to join Functions Technology within Barclays Legal Technology.
In this role, you will work at the forefront of AI adoption within the Legal function, partnering directly with lawyers, business stakeholders, and technology teams to design, build, and deploy AI-powered solutions that transform how legal services are delivered.
You will combine advanced software engineering, modern AI/ML technologies, and AWS cloud architecture to solve complex business problems, rapidly turning ideas into production-ready capabilities. Working across the full delivery lifecycle, you will lead technical discovery, solution design, prototyping, engineering, and deployment, ensuring solutions deliver measurable business value while meeting Barclays' security, governance, and operational standards.
This is a highly visible, client-facing, technical leadership role suited to individuals who enjoy working directly with stakeholders, translating business challenges into innovative AI solutions, and driving adoption of cutting-edge technologies including large language models, agentic AI, and intelligent workflow automation.
You will be part of a growing Legal Technology team responsible for delivering Barclays' Legal AI strategy, helping to build next-generation capabilities that augment legal professionals, improve operational efficiency, and unlock new ways of working across the organisation.
To Be Successful In This Role, You Should Have
- Experience with AI/ML technologies (ideally, Anthropic Claude, Open AI) and Python (advanced).
- Experience with AWS cloud architecture (Lambda, S3, ECS, API Gateway setup).
- Client-facing technical leadership.
Some Other Highly Valued Skills Include
- Data Engineering experience.
- DevOps pipeline creation using AWS.
- Experience in Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
You may be assessed on key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, communication skills, and interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders, as well as job-specific technical skills.
This role is based out of our Glasgow office.

Purpose of the role
To design, develop, and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.
Accountabilities
- Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
- Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

- Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross-functional areas of impact and alignment.
