I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This is intended to be a genuine equity opportunity for someone who wants to help create a firm rather than simply join one.
Practice areas
We are open to applications from Scottish solicitors across a broad range of practice areas.
It is not essential that the successful candidate has one particular specialism. The wider ambition is to develop Audax Legal into a full-service Scottish and cross-border practice, and the right person’s experience, relationships and interests will help shape the areas in which the firm grows first.
Experience in any of the following would be particularly welcome:
- residential conveyancing;
- commercial property;
- corporate and commercial law;
- dispute resolution;
- construction;
- renewable energy;
- private client work;
- employment;
- family law; or
- general commercial practice.
However, experience in residential conveyancing, commercial property or both would be especially valuable.
Property is likely to form an important part of the firm’s initial Scottish offering, including the potential development of a traditional Scottish solicitor-led estate agency service alongside conveyancing and wider property advice.
The successful candidate does not need to be solely a property lawyer, but they should ideally be comfortable helping establish a credible and properly supervised Scottish property offering, whether through their own experience or through the recruitment of additional specialist lawyers.
About you
We are looking for someone who is:
- a qualified Scottish solicitor holding a current practising certificate;
- dual-qualified in Scotland and England and Wales, or interested in cross-border practice, although dual qualification is not essential;
- commercially minded and entrepreneurial;
- interested in building a firm and developing new business;
- capable of taking genuine responsibility for the Scottish practice;
- committed to excellent client service;
- collaborative, pragmatic and forward-thinking;
- excited by the opportunity to influence the culture and direction of a new firm; and
- motivated by long-term ownership and growth rather than a conventional salaried career path.

An existing client following or strong referral network would be highly advantageous, particularly during the firm’s early growth, but we are equally interested in individuals who can demonstrate a credible ability and determination to build relationships and generate work.
We are not looking only for someone with a particular book of business.
We are looking for the right person to help build the business.
What we are building
Our intention is to create a distinctive Scottish law firm that combines:
- the professional traditions and local understanding of a Scottish practice;
- a strong Edinburgh identity;
- integrated English and Scottish legal capability;
- modern technology and efficient ways of working;
- a broad commercial and private client offering;
- solicitor-led residential and commercial property services;
- genuine ownership opportunities for ambitious lawyers; and
- a collaborative culture focused on sustainable growth.
The long-term vision is a full-service boutique practice capable of advising businesses, entrepreneurs, families and private clients throughout Scotland and across the wider UK.
The structure
The successful candidate would join the Scottish company as a director, subject to agreeing suitable terms and obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals.
The exact equity, remuneration and working arrangements would be discussed openly with the preferred candidate and structured to reflect:
- experience;
- contribution;
- client relationships;
- business development;
- management responsibility; and
- long-term commitment to the firm.
All discussions will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Interested?
This opportunity may suit an experienced solicitor who has considered establishing their own practice but would prefer to do so with a co-founder, existing infrastructure and a wider cross-border vision.
It may also suit a senior associate, legal director, salaried partner or existing partner who wants greater autonomy, genuine ownership and the chance to help build something from its earliest stage.
Audax Legal will be:
- Based in Edinburgh. Firmly Scottish. Connected across the United Kingdom.
