Job Title

Founding Engineer - Product (Front-end/Full-stack)

Salary

£90k-£120k + Equity

Company Description

Material Difference is a venture-backed Cambridge University spin-out that recently closed a $4m oversubscribed round to transform critical mineral exploration using explainable AI.

Job Description

As the first product-focused engineer, you will own the user experience and visualization layer of our subsurface mapping platform. Location

London, UK

Why this role is remarkable

  • Work on a mission-critical problem: the world needs more copper and lithium than ever before, and your code directly accelerates the global energy transition.
  • True founding-team impact as the first product engineer, shaping the technical architecture and engineering culture from day one with significant equity and ownership.
  • High-caliber environment within a Cambridge spin-out supported by industry veterans and $4m in fresh funding to scale breakthrough geoscience technology to the world's largest miners.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What You Will Do

  • Build and own interactive 3D subsurface visualizations using WebGL/Three.js to make complex geological uncertainty legible for expert and executive decision-makers.
  • Collaborate directly with the ML team to integrate explainable AI models into a reliable, enterprise-grade product used by the world's largest mining companies.
  • Iterate rapidly on workflows and interfaces based on real-world user feedback from pilots, moving the platform from a powerful demo to a must-have product.

The ideal candidate

  • Deep expertise in TypeScript and React with a proven track record of shipping production-grade 3D, WebGL, or geospatial visualizations like Three.js, deck.gl, or Cesium.
  • Experience building B2B or enterprise SaaS products that have navigated complex security and procurement reviews, ideally within scientific, engineering, or geospatial domains.
  • An entrepreneurial, self-directing mindset with the resilience to thrive in an ambiguous, early-stage environment without a defined playbook and a passion for climate-tech mission.
