About the Role
The Accounting Manager sits within the Forecasting, Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team and holds end-to-end accountability for:
- The UK&I month-end close
- SG&A accounting
You’ll ensure timely, high-quality outputs with a strong financial discipline across the Finance function. Your responsibilities include:
- Day-to-day leadership of the month-end close
- Oversight of offshore Management Accounting teams
- End-to-end SG&A accounting ownership
- Business partnering with HR & IS for cost control
- Monthly SG&A P&L integrity with clear cost tracking.
- Delivering clean, explainable close processes with forward-looking actual vs. forecast bridges
Operating at the intersection of technical accounting judgment and cross-functional leadership, you will:
- Partner closely with HR, IS, and FP&A teams
- Escalate and resolve challenges efficiently
- Drive continuous improvement across all processes
Key Responsibilities
Month-End Close Leadership
- Own end-to-end UK&I month-end close, with accounting accountability for UK&I SG&A
- Lead the close schedule and interact with an offshore team, setting clear ownership, deadlines, and sequencing
- Ensure the close process is:
- Timely and predictable
- Clearly owned and backed by review and sign-off
- Compliant with group accounting policies and controls
- Be the primary point of escalation for close issues, resolving them quickly and pragmatically
- Drive continuous improvement in efficiency, quality, and discipline
- Provide a clean, understandable bridge from actuals to the forecast and plan.
SG&A Accounting & Business Partnering
- Own end-to-end SG&A accounting, ensuring costs are:
- Complete and accurately recorded
- Correctly classified and allocated
- Consistently reflected in actuals, forecasts, and plans
- Work closely with HR and IS for cost transparency, accuracy, and control.
- Hold clear ownership over:
- Accruals and prepayments
- Provisions and estimates
- Material movements (vs. prior period/forecast)
- Apply accounting judgment, balancing technical precision with commercial pragmatism.
- Provide visibility and challenge on actual vs. forecast spend.
- Partner with HR, IS, and FP&A to ensure a consistent, supported cost view.

P&L Integrity, Review & Governance
- Custodian of SG&A P&L integrity, ensuring:
- Clear cost ownership
- Consistent application of accounting policies
- Robust and transparent use of judgment/estimates
- Engage with Cost Centre Managers to:
- Enforce SG&A spend transparency and planning
- Challenge trends, timing, and misclassification if required
- Reinforce cost-control accountability and discipline
- Review and challenge unusual items, reclassification, or trends with HR, IS, and FP&A teams.
- Collaborate closely to correct inconsistencies and ensure no reliance on off-cycle fixes.
Line Management & Accountability
- Manage the FP&A Analyst (Direct Marketing spend):
- Conduct 1:1s, objective-setting, and performance reviews
- Provide professional development support
- Ensure accounting outputs:
- Are measureable, explainable, and auditable
- Do not have unexplained variances at month-end.
- Maintain high-quality documentation for all judgments, estimates, and cost reviews.
Controls, Best Practices & Standards
- Ensure SG&A and close processes align with strong financial controls.
- Establish clear standards for:
- Accruals and documentation accuracy
- Audit readiness and review approvals
- Share established best practices across Accounting and FP&A teams to reduce key-person dependency.
- Collaborate with Internal Audit and Control teams to address findings sustainably.

Requirements & Criteria
Essential:
✅ Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent). ✅ Strong technical expertise in month-end close and P&L drafting. ✅ Experience ownership of complex close processes in a large organisation. ✅ Proven ability to lead offshore/shared-service teams. ✅ Judgment and analytical skills with the ability to challenge norms constructively. ✅ Talent to translate financial data into practical insights for non-finance stakeholders.
Desirable:
🚀 Experience in an SG&A-heavy environment. 🚀 Familiarity with SAP or a similar ERP system. 🚀 Experience in audit-intensive operating environments. 🚀 Line-management experience (ability to set clear objectives, coach, and elevate teams).

- Sharp, well-explained SG&A results, owned end-to-end by the finance team.

- Early issue detection and resolution, so problems do not surface as audit risks.
- Embedded, process-driven best practice, eliminating heavy reliance on key individuals.
- A geographically unified FP&A team, working quickly with shared purpose.
- A highly supported FP&A team; analysts are development-focused, clear in their roles, producing transparent and well-controlled Direct Marketing reporting.
