Free School Meal Engagement Officer, HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL
Free School Meal (FSM) Engagement Officer
As a Free School Meal (FSM) Engagement Officer, you’ll take on a meaningful role where your work directly supports communities, improves child welfare, and fosters equitable educational opportunities across Hampshire.
Using your strong communication skills, collaborative drive, and dedication to community impact, you'll work closely with schools, families and partner organisations to raise awareness of Free School Meals (FSM), encourage registration, and drive participation.
By addressing barriers to FSM registration and supporting both schools and eligible families, you’ll play a pivotal role in reducing health inequalities and helping children thrive academically and developmentally, aligning with Hampshire’s Health and Wellbeing and Public Health strategies.
What You’ll Do
- Lead targeted initiatives to increase FSM registration and uptake across Hampshire.
- Collaborate with schools, families, and partners to identify and remove barriers to registration, applying a behaviour change approach.
- Design and deliver campaigns, workshops, and accessible resources to engage families, including underrepresented communities.
- Train and support school staff to enhance FSM processes, promote pupil premium, and strengthen family engagement.
- Manage the Online Free School Meal Portal, including handling applications, resolving queries, and driving process improvements.
- Utilise data and insights to monitor performance, track impact, and drive continuous improvement.
- Forge strong partnerships across education, public health, and broader stakeholders to advocate for policy change and advance school food priorities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
