At University Hospitals of Derby and Burton

We believe that speaking up can save lives, improves experiences, and helps us become a better place to work. We are looking for a compassionate and approachable Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU) Guardian to support colleagues across our organization to raise concerns, share ideas, and speak openly about issues that matter to them.

This is a unique and rewarding role for someone who is passionate about listening, building trust, and creating positive change. Every day brings something different, from supporting an individual colleague through a difficult situation to helping leaders learn from concerns and improve services for our patients and staff.

As our FTSU Guardian, you will work independently and impartially, providing a safe and confidential route for colleagues to speak up. You will champion an open and inclusive culture where everyone feels heard, respected, and valued.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will play a key part in fostering a culture where colleagues feel safe, supported, and empowered to speak up. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting colleagues who wish to speak up about concerns, ideas, or experiences.
  • Providing independent, impartial, and confidential guidance.
  • Working closely with leaders to ensure concerns are responded to appropriately.
  • Identifying themes and insight from cases to drive organizational learning and improvement.
  • Delivering training, awareness sessions, and communications to promote a positive speaking up culture.
  • Producing reports and presenting insights to senior leaders and committees.
  • Supporting and developing our network of Freedom to Speak Up Champions across the Trust.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
