Front End Specialist Launch Team

Process Start-Up Expert | Ball Corporation

Role Overview

This position is focused on process start-up performance across new builds, new lines, and line conversions in critical aluminium cupper, bodymaker, and trimmer areas. Key responsibilities include:

  • Mainstreaming safety, efficiency, and quality as the first priority, with emphasis on reducing spoilage and optimising material usage.
  • Serving as a technical leader for process start-up, lead-in, and ramp-up ensuring adherence to design specifications.
  • On-site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned process areas, driving stable, reliable, high-performance operations.
  • Linking site expertise with engineering, production, and quality teams to deliver loss-free start-ups aligned with agreed performance targets.

The role impacts global start-up excellence, continuous improvement (CI) initiatives, and apprenticeship training for future operational success.


Key Responsibilities

Operation Exprès and Reliability

  • Champion a "safety-first" culture, ensuring safe work practices and equipment compliance—coaching team members and new hires.
  • Lead from installation through to steady-state operation, coordinating hands-on technical support during setup, commissioning, and early production stages.
  • Appraise processologist to a Level 3 aligned with BOE standards for safety, quality, business management, and maintenance pillars.

Teaching, Leading, and Training

  • Deliver structured training (80% on-the-job, 20% classroom-based) to enhance operator and mechanic capabilities in:
    • Operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and process efficiency.
    • On-site hands-on training for operational squads and compliance with production management approaches.
  • Mentor junior team members in autonomous process understanding, performance diagnostics, and repair ceremonies.

Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement

  • Provide urgent, real-time troubleshooting during start-ups and resolutions of line stoppages, ensuring rapid fault rectification with process, chemical, and mechanical expertise.
  • Deploy root cause analysis (RCA) to address recurring issues, incorporating structured problem-solving techniques to minimise downtime and delightfully stabilise processes.
  • Capture and share lessons learned to embed into future start-ups and factory improvements.

Collaboration and Accountability

  • Work with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to ensure a successful transition from start-up to continuous operation once KPIs are met.
  • Support metric-driven goals—specifically achieving efficiency and spoilage targets as outlined in start-up curves.
  • Share best practices (BPMs) globally and organise best practice workshops to leverage collective learning.

Further Support

  • Coordinate parts, tooling, and resource readiness to facilitate smooth onboarding.
  • Develop holistic operational readiness assessments, including flexibility for size changeovers and value stream mapping support.
  • Offer alert support during breakdowns to address escalation situations and mitigate critical downtime risks.
  • Assist the plant team to develop proficiency in safe, efficient, and reproducible production changes during the fresh team fire stage.

The Ideal Candidate

Education & Experience

  • Mechanical/Electrical qualification (essential)
  • Training/teaching qualification (minimum Train the Trainer)
  • Minimum 5 years’ seasoned experience in aluminium can production—with expertise in at least one core area (uyant body prerequisite).
  • Process knowledge capability—proven ability to transfer best practices and troubleshoot internal first stages.
  • Preferred: Experience with line launches, rebuild projects, or similar methodologies to accelerate new teamadership performance objectives.

Technical Competencies

  • Advanced understanding of line equipment, efficiency tools, and performance tracking mater (MCEs, data analysis, indicators).
  • Ability to execute pertinent SME activities to troubleshoot critical operating and maintenance processes.
