Salary: £2,887.80 - £3,497.88 (Depending on age)
Working Pattern: Hybrid (on-site and/or remote)
Location: Cambridge, UK
Eligibility: Only open to applicants who are not currently in employment or training at the time of application. Must be physically based within 20 miles of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough for the duration of the internship

Cambridge Surgical Models (CSM) is a multi-award-winning MedTech company producing state-of-the-art of surgical training tools in the form of next-generation skin pads, artificial human organs and AI powered evaluation technology. Founded in 2023 by Cambridge University graduates, CSM utilises advanced manufacturing processes combined with engineered composite materials to produce high-fidelity organ models. CSM is supported by leading organisations such as the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme and actively collaborates with NHS Trusts, Surgical Training Centres, Medical Schools, Surgical Societies and Medical Device companies. CSM’s mission is to improve surgical outcomes worldwide, by empowering surgeons with next-generation training solutions.
Role Description:
We are seeking a motivated Full Stack Developer Intern to join the Cambridge Surgical Models team for a six-week paid internship. You will be spearheading the development of a smartphone application that leverages computer vision, image classification, and machine learning.
You will gain hands-on experience across both front-end and back-end development while contributing to a live product with real-world applications.
This role is ideal for an Engineering or Computer Science student or recent graduate with relevant experience looking to apply their software development skills in an innovative MedTech environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Back-End Development:
- Develop and maintain the server-side architecture supporting the smartphone application.
- Build secure and scalable APIs for communication between the mobile application and cloud services. $15,000 of Claude credits available.
- Develop and integrate machine learning and computer vision models into the application workflow.
- Develop systems for image processing, storage, and data management.
- Optimise application performance and ensure reliable data handling.
- Support testing, debugging, and deployment of application features.

Front-End Development:
- Develop an intuitive and responsive mobile user interface.
- Implement responsive design principles for a seamless experience across different devices.
- Develop and integrate fluid image capture, upload and processing functionality with appropriate validation and feedback.
- Design visualisation features to display processed images and analysis results clearly.
- Collaborate on improving usability and overall user experience.
General Responsibilities:
- Participate in planning meetings and agile development activities.
- Document code and development processes.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members.
- Test and troubleshoot software components.
- Present progress and outcomes at the conclusion of the internship.
Desirable Qualifications:
Applicants should be studying towards, or have recently completed, a degree in one of the following or a related discipline:
- Computer Science
- Software Engineering
- Artificial Intelligence
- Data Science
- Electronic Engineering
- Mathematics or a related technical subject
Experience with some of the following would be advantageous:
- JavaScript or TypeScript
- Python
- React, React Native, Flutter or similar frameworks
- RESTful APIs
- Node.js or equivalent back-end technologies
- SQL or NoSQL databases
- Git version control
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud)
- Machine learning or computer vision libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV)
