80% Remote (1 day per week in London office)
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Contract Full Stack Developer with deep expertise in Ruby on Rails to join our engineering team. This is a backend-focused role (~75% Ruby on Rails, 25% PostgreSQL, REST API, TDD, React & Next.js), where you’ll play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining scalable, high-performance applications.
Note: This role is 85% backend-heavy—75% coding is backend-focused, with 25% front-end work.
You’ll collaborate closely with our Product, Design, and Engineering teams to deliver new features, improve platform performance, and drive technical excellence. This is a great opportunity for a contractor who:

Key Responsibilities
Backend Development (Primary Focus – 75%)
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable Ruby on Rails applications and services
- Build robust, secure, and well-documented RESTful APIs for customer and installer platforms
- Optimise PostgreSQL performance, including:
- Query optimisation
- Indexing strategies
- Locking optimisations
- Resolving N+1 query issues
- Develop scalable backend architectures, such as:
- Background processing
- Caching strategies
- Asynchronous jobs
- Third-party integrations
- Adhere to best practices, including:
- Test-Driven Development (TDD) with RSpec
- Continuous Integration (CI) & Continuous Delivery (CD)
- Clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
- Diagnose and resolve production issues to ensure:
- High application performance
- Reliability & scalability
- Continuously improve platform architecture, code quality, and engineering processes

Frontend Development (Secondary Focus – 25%)
- Develop and enhance responsive user interfaces using React & Next.js
- Integrate frontend applications with back-end REST APIs
- Build cross-browser compatible experiences for desktop and mobile devices
- Contribute to frontend performance optimisations and modern component architecture
Technical Leadership
- Own features end-to-end, from discovery to production deployment
- Collaborate with Product Managers to:
- Shape technical solutions
- Estimate work
- Identify risks
- Break down complex business requirements into clear, actionable deliverables
- Participate in architecture discussions to influence technical direction
- Lead by example through:
- High-quality engineering practices
- Constructive code reviews
- Mentorship of junior engineers
- Identify opportunities to improve:
- Tooling, CI/CD pipelines
- Development workflows
- Engineering processes

Essential Skills & Experience
- 6+ years of commercial software development experience
- Ruby on Rails expertise (backend-focused, with strong engineering skills)
- Scalable API & REST API development experience (distributed systems)
- Strong knowledge of Object-Oriented Analysis & Design (OOAD)
- PostgreSQL mastery, including:
- Schema design
- SQL optimisation
- Database performance tuning
- Experience with:
- Background workers (e.g., Sidekiq, Resque)
- Caching strategies
- Automated testing in Rails (RSpec, high test coverage)
- React & Next.js (component-based development, API integrations)
- Experience in Agile development teams
- Proficiency in Git workflows, Pull Requests, and code reviews
- Strong problem-solving & independent work skills
- Commitment to writing clean, maintainable, efficient code
Note: Ideally, you’d be located near London but will work 80% remotely.
