(Contract Role – 4 Months, INSIDE IR35, Based in Greater Manchester)

We’re supporting a leading global footwear retailer in establishing dedicated Marketplace and Conversion Optimisation squads ahead of Peak season. In partnership with Whitehall Resources, we are seeking a Senior/Principal Full Stack Engineer to drive scalable software solutions while embedding best-in-class engineering practices in a high-impact team.

This is an exceptional hands-on role pushing beyond typical senior engineer duties. You will design and deliver cutting-edge solutions, lead by setting engineering standards, and elevate team capabilities through technical leadership and mentorship.


About the Role

  • Contract Duration: 4 months (inside IR35) with Greater Manchester base
  • Focus Areas: Marketplace and Conversion Optimisation squads
  • Impact Area: Critical pre-Peak digital commerce improvements
  • Engineering Excellence: Champion clean code, automation & scalable cloud-native systems

Key Responsibilities

Technical Ownership & Delivery

  • Design, build and deploy scalable, secure and cloud-native applications across Marketplace and Conversion domains.
  • Work closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Data Analysts and QA teams to translate complex business problems into technical solutions.
  • Own features from ideation through production, delivering customer-facing capabilities that boost conversion, UX and revenue.
  • Pair programme with engineers to resolve technical challenges.
  • Execute technical decisions balancing speed, quality and maintainability.
  • Lead technical implementation across SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) with pragmatic governance.

Engineering Leadership & Culture

  • Embed software craftsmanship and advocate for clean, maintainable and reusable code.
  • Champion automated testing, secure-by-default principles and observability.
  • Foster reusable, modular components via architectural patterns.
  • Mentor junior engineers through mentorship and peer code reviews.
  • Drive culture of ownership and continuous improvement across delivery teams.

Scalable & Modern Engineering Practices

  • Optimise CI/CD pipelines to reduce friction in build, test, and deployment stages.
  • Improve release quality, deployment confidence and delivery predictability.
  • Promote feature flags and progressive delivery for safer rollouts.
  • Ensure production systems are observable, resilient and operationally robust.
  • Automate repetitive engineering tasks (builds, QA gates, testing).

Strategic Architecture & Innovation

  • Deploy loosely coupled, scalable microservices with cross-team coordination.
  • Apply IaC (Infrastructure as Code) and reusable patterns for sustainable systems.
  • Integrate AI-assisted engineering tools (code generation, automation, knowledge retrieval).
  • Embed modern architecture principles (event-driven, composable) where beneficial.

Technical Excellence & Community Building

  • Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies to enhance team productivity.
  • Create and share engineering guidelines, playbooks and reusable assets.
  • Collaborate on κι-novation and industry-leading practices.

Key Skills & Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • 8+ years of Full Stack software engineering in a commercial environment.
  • Deep expertise in:
    • React / Next.js (frontend frameworks/planning).
    • Node.js / TypeScript (backend stack).
    • AWS cloud development (EC2, Lambda, ECS, S3, IAM, security).
    • Scalable microservices, REST APIs.
    • GitHub & modern Git workflows (branching strategies, PR processes).
  • Strong practical knowledge of:
    • CI/CD & continuous delivery (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
    • Automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end).
    • Agile delivery and collaboration with non-engineering teams.

Desirable (Aplus Bonus)

  • Experience with composable commerce platforms or tools.
  • Terraform / IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Docker & Kubernetes deployment.
  • Monorepo architectures (Nx, Lerna/Bazel).

Nice-to-Have (Technical Catalyst)

  • Advanced skills in:
    • Event-driven architecture / event streaming.
    • Event-driven data pipelines & consumer-driven contracts.
    • Feature flagging tools (LaunchDarkly, Unleash).
    • Observability platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
  • Familiarity with:
    • AI-assisted engineering tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini Code Assist).
