Software Engineer

About the Role
Software Engineering sits at the core of Thought Machine. We leverage cutting-edge practices and modern tools to solve complex, unsolved problems in banking. Your work spans full-stack development, from backend services to delightful frontend experiences, built for scale, security, and performance.
Our clients include global financial institutions and regional banks, demanding flexibility to accommodate diverse use cases. Engineers bridge backend and frontend, crafting customised solutions tailored to clients’ needs.
This is a full-time, permanent position based in London, requiring 3 days onsite (with the option to increase to 4 days, including a financial allowance).

Responsibilities
- Design and implement end-to-end features across applications and services.
- Prioritise security, scalability, performance, and user experience in all solutions.
- Write and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, acceptance, etc.).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (backend, frontend, full-stack engineers).
- Translate customer requirements into clear, scalable engineering plans.
- Debug from testing to production environments.
- Own technical decisions while embracing mentorship and best practices.
Essential Requirements
- Expertise with React + TypeScript – building modern web applications.
- Strong proficiency in REST APIs/development services.
- Keen attention to detail and passion for clean, well-tested code.
- Knowledge in integrating automated tests into development workflows.
- Enthusiasm for client-facing projects, including requirement scoping and deliverables.
- A proactive mindset for learning and growing as an engineer.
Desirable Experience
- Background in banking/finance or fintech.
- Cloud experience, AWS or other platforms.
- Proficiency in Golang, Python, or related tooling.
- Understanding of UX/UX paradigms and UI frameworks.
- Familiarity with Figma, design systems, or Augustin (our design tool).
- Exposure to Databases (SQL/NoSQL) or architectures (microservices, networking).
- Kubernetes.scale or shift to our engineering excellence,
