Functional Skills Teacher – Maths

Location: HMP Dovegate, Staffordshire ST14 8XR Salary: £33,738 – £37,652 plus excellent benefits Hours: 08:15 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week)

As a Functional Skills Teacher within our Justice and Immigration team, you will deliver high-quality teaching in Mathematics, empowering learners to build confidence, acquire essential skills, and progress toward brighter, more independent futures. Your work directly contributes to rehabilitation, enhancing literacy, numeracy, digital capability, and employability.

This role offers the opportunity to shape meaningful learning experiences, fostering change through purposeful teaching, inclusive practices, and unwavering commitment to learner development. You’ll help individuals unlock new opportunities, equipping them with the skills needed for successful reintegration into their communities.


What You’ll Do

As the Core Tutor – Maths, you will be entrusted with:

  • Delivering interactive and inclusive Maths education, engaging learners effectively.
  • Creating and maintaining Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), monitoring progress, and adapting support as necessary.
  • Developing schemes of work and lesson plans, including flexible "roll-on, roll-off" programmes.
  • Embedding employability skills, functional learning, and British Values into all teaching sessions.
  • Contributing to curriculum development and improving existing learning resources.
  • Managing accreditation, assessments, marking, and learner certification.
  • Maintaining a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment in line with prison protocols.
  • Keeping accurate learner records, registers, ILPs, and exam documentation.
  • Collaborating with education managers, prison staff, and external partners to enhance learning outcomes.

Requirements

This role is ideal if you have:

  • A minimum Level 3 teaching qualification (AET or equivalent) and Level 3 Assessor/Individualised Assessment & Guidance (IAG) qualifications.
  • Experience delivering coaching in Mathematics.
  • Strong planning, organisational, and communication skills.
  • A commitment to inclusive practice, learner-centred support, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working in a structured environment with an understanding of safeguarding and compliance requirements.

Vetting and Checks

An Enhanced DBS clearance is mandatory for this role and covers:

  • Spent and unspent convictions
  • Cautions
  • Relevant police information (in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and safeguarding policies)

Additionally, you will complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to access necessary support for a successful transition into the role.
