Funeral Director

Position: Funeral Director Location: Clarabut & Plumbe, Bedford Job Type: Full-time, permanent Salary: £30,854.12 per annum including additional on-call payments


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate individual to join our team as a Funeral Director at Clarabut & Plumbe Funeral Directors in Bedford. In this role, you will:

  • Oversee funeral operations ensuring seamless delivery to the highest standards.
  • Provide support and guidance to families during one of life’s most challenging moments.
  • Represent the local brand and the Dignity Group, engaging with the community and fostering trusted relationships.

This position requires deep expertise in funeral processes, care for the deceased, legal compliance, and a respectful understanding of cultural, religious, and individual beliefs.


Key Responsibilities

As the Funeral Director, you will:

  • Lead funeral services with professionalism and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Conduct pre-funeral briefings, ensuring clarity and coordination for all stakeholders.
  • Adopt a consultative approach—helping families explore options and make informed decisions.
  • Collaborate with arrangers, specialists, and care teams to deliver cohesive services.
  • Manage appointments, resources, and records, maintaining smooth operations.
  • Assist with coffin preparation, handling the deceased, and chapel duties as required.
  • Mentor junior team members, facilitating training and growth opportunities.
  • Represent the funergy with community engagement by building partnerships with care homes, celebrants, and local religious/ethnic groups.
  • Serve as a liaison between service teams and clients, ensuring streamlined scheduling.

Required Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Current or previous experience as a funeral director, working directly with the deceased and grieving families.
  • Proven legal and regulatory knowledge relating to funeral practice.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
  • A calm under pressure approach, blending compassion and professionalism.
  • Manual handling capability, including lifting and supporting heavy items (e.g., coffins).
  • Availability to work weekends and on-call shifts.
  • A full UK driving licence (essential).
