This is a hands-on leadership role where you will be responsible for leading a gang in the delivery of highway maintenance and improvement works across the local road network. What you'll be doing
- Leading a highway maintenance gang to deliver works safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
- Carrying out and overseeing a wide range of highway maintenance activities including kerb laying, footway improvements, asphalt and foam base laying, drainage works, traffic signal chamber and duct installation, vegetation clearance, excavation works and vacuum excavation activities.
- Liaising closely with Supervisors and Agents to ensure site briefings, permits and work activities are properly coordinated.
- Using site drawings, specifications and digital systems to ensure works are completed right first time.
- Monitoring materials, plant and equipment to maximise productivity and efficiency.
- Promoting a strong safety culture by reporting observations, close calls and good practices.
- Supporting emergency response activities, winter maintenance services and out-of-hours operations when required.
- Building positive working relationships with colleagues, clients and stakeholders while delivering excellent customer service.
- Contributing to the effective management of resources to support successful project delivery.
Who we're looking for

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
