Ganger Groundworker

Lead Hand / Ganger (Chelmsford) – Groundworks & Water Industry

About the Role

At JN Bentley Ltd, we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Lead Hand/Ganger to lead a groundworks gang based in, and around, the Chelmsford area. The role will primarily operate on the Anglian Water framework and requires a preference for joining with a Skilled or Semi-Skilled Groundworker.

This presents an excellent opportunity for an experienced candidate in civils and groundworks to join a growing and well-established business. You must demonstrate a proactive approach to work, Health & Safety—particularly within the water industry—and general civil work, including:

  • Concreting
  • Deep drainage
  • Pipe laying

Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting to Site Management, you will lead and supervise a groundworks gang across multiple construction sites, primarily within the water industry.
  • Ensure high standards of productivity, quality, and health & safety are maintained.
  • Due to the regional scope, temporary lodging away may be required at times.

Candidate Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Proven experience in managing a gang for civil construction projects.
  • Ideally part of a pre-formed groundworks gang, including experienced Skilled & General Operatives.
  • Strong Health & Safety focus, with experience in a reporting culture.
  • Background in general civil works, focusing on:
    • Concrete pour supervision
    • Deep drainage execution
    • Pipe laying (including different pipework types)
  • Valid CSCS card with:
    • CPCS/NOCN or NPORS qualification
    • Relevant NVQ
    • Plant tickets (e.g. excavator, dumper)
  • Experience in Site Supervisor or Site Management training.
  • Full UK Driving Licence (essential).
