Ganger Groundworker
Lead Hand / Ganger (Chelmsford) – Groundworks & Water Industry
About the Role
At JN Bentley Ltd, we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Lead Hand/Ganger to lead a groundworks gang based in, and around, the Chelmsford area. The role will primarily operate on the Anglian Water framework and requires a preference for joining with a Skilled or Semi-Skilled Groundworker.
This presents an excellent opportunity for an experienced candidate in civils and groundworks to join a growing and well-established business. You must demonstrate a proactive approach to work, Health & Safety—particularly within the water industry—and general civil work, including:
- Concreting
- Deep drainage
- Pipe laying
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting to Site Management, you will lead and supervise a groundworks gang across multiple construction sites, primarily within the water industry.
- Ensure high standards of productivity, quality, and health & safety are maintained.
- Due to the regional scope, temporary lodging away may be required at times.

Candidate Specification
Essential Criteria
- Proven experience in managing a gang for civil construction projects.
- Ideally part of a pre-formed groundworks gang, including experienced Skilled & General Operatives.
- Strong Health & Safety focus, with experience in a reporting culture.
- Background in general civil works, focusing on:
- Concrete pour supervision
- Deep drainage execution
- Pipe laying (including different pipework types)
- Valid CSCS card with:
- CPCS/NOCN or NPORS qualification
- Relevant NVQ
- Plant tickets (e.g. excavator, dumper)
- Experience in Site Supervisor or Site Management training.
- Full UK Driving Licence (essential).
