Ganger Groundworker
Lead Hand / Ganger – Groundworks (Newmarket Area)
Location: Newmarket, heavy focus on Anglian Water Framework Type: Full-time
About the Role
At JN Bentley Ltd, we are seeking an energetic and experienced Lead Hand/Ganger to oversee a groundworks gang predominantly within the water industry, ensuring a high standard of productivity, quality, and health & safety.
You will report to Site Management, leading a team of Skilled and Semi-Skilled Groundworkers across civil construction sites in the Newmarket region. Due to the spread of the workload, lodge away accommodation may occasionally be required.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong background in civils and groundworks, eager to contribute to a growing, well-established business. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong proactive approach to work, Health & Safety, and experience in the water industry, including general civil work, concreting, deep drainage, and pipe laying.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a groundworks gang across multiple construction sites.
- Ensure high productivity, quality control, and Health & Safety compliance.
- Coordinate with Site Management and contribute to project execution within the water infrastructure sector.
- Manage team dynamics, site organisation, and resource allocation.
- Assess risks and implement preventative Health & Safety measures.

Candidate Specification
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in managing a groundworks gang on civil engineering projects.
- Strong commitment to Health & Safety compliance within a reporting framework.
- Experience in general civil works, including:
- Concrete pours
- Deep drainage systems
- Pipe laying (including water industry-specific pipework)
- Current CSCS, CPCS, or NOCN/NPORS card with NVQ and relevant plant tickets.
- Site Supervisor or Site Management training (or equivalent).
- Full UK driving licence (essential).
Advantageous (Non-mandatory but preferred)
- National Water Hygiene card
- Thames Water Passport
- Experience/Ticketing in:
- Slinger/signaller or crane lift supervisor
- Confined spaces (City & Guilds certified)
- 3-day first aid at work certification
- Additional plant operation tickets (e.g., excavators, mini diggers).
