Ganger Groundworker
Lead Hand / Ganger (Groundworks) – Anglian Water Framework
At JN Bentley Ltd, we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Lead Hand / Ganger to lead a groundworks gang based in and around Bury St Edmunds, working primarily on the Anglian Water framework. We are ideally looking for someone to join a Skilled or Semi-Skilled Groundworker gang.
The Opportunity
This is a sterling opportunity for an experienced civils and groundworks professional to join a well-established and expanding business. You must demonstrate:
- A proactive attitude toward work and Health & Safety
- Relevant experience within the water industry and wider civil concreting, deep drainage, and pipe-laying sectors
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to Site Management, the successful candidate will:
- Lead and supervise a groundworks gang across construction sites, primarily in the water industry
- Maintain high standards of productivity, quality, and Health & Safety
- Ensure compliance with regional work requirements, including lodging-away duties when necessary (due to geographic spread)
Candidate Specification
Essential:
- Proven experience managing a gang on civil projects
- Ideally, leads an established gang with Skilled and General Operatives
- Demonstratable Health & Safety focus, particularly in reporting-driven environments
- Experience in general civil works including:
- Concrete pours and finishing
- Deep drainage and trenching
- Pipe-laying (all pipework sizes and complexities)
- Current valid:
- CSCS card (must be in date)
- Either CPCS Certificates (issued by Course Provider e.g. Western Power Distribution or with associated competencies such as D11-P or D31-G)
- NPORS (Newborn) (substitutes for CPCS)
- NVQ in Building Construction (Groundworks)

- Site Supervisor or to Site Management equivalent training
- Full UK driving licence is essential
Advantageous but not essential:
- National Water Hygiene card
- Thames Water Passport
- Slinger/Chartsman or Crane Lift Supervisor certification
- Confined Spaces qualification (ideally City & Guilds accredited)
- Further plant tickets beyond essentials
- 3-day First Aid (level 3 qualification)
