Job Title: Gas Control Module Technician
Location: Cramlington, Northumberland
Salary: To: £34,000 depending on experience (part time would be considered)
Advanced Engineering Solutions (AES) is a multi-disciplinary engineering company delivering on-site and workshop services to the water and gas utilities, nationally and internationally. AES is based in the North-East of England, 10 miles north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is part of a group of utility service companies owned by South Staffordshire plc.
The services provided by AES focus on maintaining and inspecting assets for transporting water and gas. Such assets include pipelines, gas pre-heating equipment, compression, filtration, pumping, and pressure reduction stations.
AES is a small but expanding business of about 30 people. The Gas Control Module (GCM) Technician will benefit from working in a close-knit team where a large amount of independent responsibility is delegated to staff and where colleagues are highly mutually supportive of each other.
We are looking for a mechanically-minded Gas Control Module Technician to join our Cramlington workshop team. You’ll play a key role in maintaining gas control modules, equipment that regulates gas flow within underground network systems.
These modules (approx. 1m tall and 40kg) are returned to our workshop for full overhaul, repair, and testing. You’ll be responsible for bringing them back into service-ready condition.
The Role
Key Responsibilities
- Disassemble, clean, repair, and reassemble gas control modules
- Carry out testing and fault-finding to ensure operational performance
- Use a variety of hand tools and workshop machinery (e.g. drills, grinders, lathe)
- Maintain accurate records and follow written operating procedures
- Manage stock, ordering, tracking, and inventory control
- Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment
- Support wider AES operations when required, including:
- Forklift driving
- Pressure testing of gas assets
- Calibration of tools and equipment

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
