General Assistant
General Assistant (Part-Time) – Musselburgh
Location
Musselburgh, Scotland
Contract
Part-time (permanent), Monday–Wednesday only
Salary
£12.71 per hour
Hours
14.5 per week across the following schedule:
- Monday: 16:30 – 20:00 (3.5 hrs)
- Tuesday: 16:30 – 20:00 (3.5 hrs)
- Wednesday: 15:00 – 19:00 (4 hrs)
About the Role
Loretto Nippers is an independent day school for boys and girls aged 4–12 in Musselburgh, serving approximately 100 children and staff daily and operating in term time (34 weeks).
We provide a full catering service including breakfast, lunches, dinners, and snacks to students and staff across the school day.
We are looking for a General Assistant to help deliver excellent food service while supporting our mission to provide fantastic meals to children and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the team in serving customers, replenishing stocks, and cleaning adherence.
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness across all food service areas.
- Set up and reset throughout the day to ensure smooth operation for breakfast, morning break, lunches, afternoon break, and supper service.
- Prepare basic food and beverages for sale in line with menu specifications and follow hygiene/safety protocols.
- Restock and replenish consumables as required, anticipating customer demand, and delivering bespoke, prompt service.
- Handle waste, recycling, and waste prevention efficiently to reduce food wastage.
- Adhere closely to food safety standards, allergen procedures, and given company aims.
- Occasionally work evenings or weekends to cover school events or functions as needed.
- Promote a customer-focused and inclusive environment in line with Loretto Nippers’ ethos.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
Experience & Experience Preferences
- Preferable experience within fast-paced catering environments.
- Essential: Strong team player with food-focused experience preferred.
- Reliability, adaptability, and strong personal presentation essential.
Non-Negotiable Skills
- Ability to work independently and on one’s own initiative.
- Excellent customer service attitude – anticipating needs and delivering exceptional experiences.
- Commitment to continuous learning and taking ownership.
- Ability to manage heavy/daily lifting (including moving trays, katering stacks, and heavy equipment).
Technical Competencies
- Preferred qualification: Level 2 Food Hygiene Certification (not essential but highly beneficial).
- Reasonable fluency in verbal and written English.
