Full-Time Permanent Maintenance Technician (Construction Trades)

Location: York Salary: £28,778 to £30,378 per annum

The Team

The Maintenance Team is responsible for ensuring the University’s teaching and accommodation buildings—spread across York—are well-maintained at all times.

The team comprises 24 skilled tradespeople working closely with the Estates Department to:

  • Perform reactive, cyclical, and planned projects across University properties
  • Address routine maintenance needs reported by staff, students, and daily operations
  • Uphold high standards in teaching and residential spaces

The team varies from general construction tasks to specialised repairs, often collaborating across multiple trades.


The Role: Maintenance Technician (Construction Trades)

Reporting to: Maintenance Manager

Key Responsibilities

You will work autonomously and collaboratively to perform a wide range of maintenance tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Brickwork and blocklaying
  • Pointing and rendering
  • Plastering of walls and ceilings
  • Roofing work
  • Paving and hard landscaping
  • Groundwork and repair activities
  • Troubleshooting and prioritising maintenance tasks via the Archibus work assignment system
  • Preparing material quotes with autonomy to procure or arrange orders
  • Assisting other members of the team across trades, depending on project needs

Location & Focus Areas

The work will predominantly be based across:

  • Student accommodation blocks
  • University teaching and administrative buildings

Required Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

✅ A formal qualification: NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a construction-related trade ✅ Completion of a recognized apprenticeship ✅ A proven competency in general building maintenance, including experience in:

  • Hazardous tasks (working at height)
  • Diverse building types
  • Adhering to strict health and safety protocols ✅ Strong physical fitness, with the ability to lift, move and work in physically demanding environments ✅ The ability to work independently or as part of a multi-skilled team
