We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for an on-site General Building Operative in HMP Long Lartin.
Job Details
- Standard hours: 39 hours per week (across 7 days when including weekend shifts).
- Weekend work: Must be available for 1 in 3 weekends on a rota basis (with an additional 15% of basic salary).
- Base salary: £28,792
About the Role
At Amey, we collaborate with His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) to ensure safe, clean, and efficient prisons across England and Wales by maintaining 60 secure premises.
The General Building Operative will:
What You Will Do
- Work in a team to deliver general maintenance tasks and support tradespeople.
- Provide professional assistance to staff regarding maintenance requests, including contractor escorting duties as required.
- Perform DIY-related tasks, including:
- Decorating and painting projects
- Hanging notice boards
- Constructing furniture
- Repairing items within the prison environment
- Inspect appliances, fittings, and general environment for defects and log all issues with your Team Leader.
- Ensure general good housekeeping, which may include litter picking and groundskeeping.
- Complete additional FM (Facilities Management) duties as directed by your manager.
- Contribute to local and business zero-carbon programmes to drive sustainable practices in a structured way.
- Maintain and adhere to health and safety (H&S) standards across all operations.

What You Will Bring
- Solid experience in DIY or general building maintenance.
- CITB relevant certification (or equivalent experience).
- A willingness to learn new skills and adapt to challenges.
- Strong teamwork abilities.
Additional Requirements
- Must undergo a Prison Security Clearance (support provided by Amey throughout the process).
