General Building Operative – HMP Leicester (On-Site)
About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic General Building Operative to join our team at HMP Leicester on a varied 39-hour week, including 1 in 3 rotating weekend shifts (with a 15% basic salary allowance). This role is part of our mission to deliver safe, clean, and efficient prison facilities for His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS).
The General Building Operative will play a key role in maintaining and improving prisons across England and Wales by ensuring planned and reactive maintenance is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Work collaboratively in a team to provide general maintenance tasks and assist tradespeople on-site.
- Offer a professional assistance service, including contractor escorting duties when required.
- Perform DIY/maintenance tasks such as:
- Decorating interior and exterior spaces
- Hanging notice boards and static display boards
- Assembling/building furniture
- Repairing items and fittings around the prison estate
- Inspect appliances, fittings, and the general environment to ensure they are in proper working order, escalating all defects to the Team Leader.
- Maintain general good housekeeping, including litter picking, waste removal, and groundskeeping responsibilities as required.
- Undertake any additional facilities management (FM) duties assigned by the Team Manager.

Additional Responsibilities
- Contribute to local and corporate zero-carbon programmes, supporting a sustainable, lean enforcement of environmental standards.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety (H&S) protocols across the contract.
Requirements
Skills & Experience
- Solid experience in DIY, general building maintenance, or related trades.
- CITB relevant certification (SKILLScard, Green Card, or equivalent) is desirable.
- Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to deliver high-quality work.
- Strong teamwork ethos with an ability to work collaboratively.
