General Building Operative
On-site General Building Operative – HMP Long Lartin
We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for an on-site General Building Operative at HMP Long Lartin.
The standard hours of work are 39 hours per week, operating across 7 days with a weekend shift pattern in place (including 1 in 3 rotating weekends alongside a 15% weekend allowance on basic salary).
The base salary is £28,792.
About the Role
At Amey, we support His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by delivering safe, clean, and efficient prisons. With expertise in facilities management, we maintain 60 secure premises across England and Wales.
The General Building Operative ensures timely, safe, and compliant planned and reactive maintenance within prisons. Your responsibilities include:
- Working in a team to perform general maintenance tasks and assist tradespeople on site.
- Providing professional assistance, including contract escorts when required.
- Handling DIY tasks, such as:
- Decorating
- Hanging notice boards
- Building furniture
- Repairing fixtures and fittings
- Checking appliances, fittings, and environments to identify defects and report these to the Team Leader.
- Maintaining general good housekeeping, including litter picking and landscaping as needed.
- Performing all directed facilities management (FM) duties as required by the Team Manager.
- Supporting local and business zero-carbon programmes in a strategic, efficient manner where applicable.
- Ensuring health and safety (H&S) standards are met across the contract.

Requirements
- Proven experience in DIY or general building maintenance.
- CITB certification or equivalent.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
Note: Prison security clearance is required (Amey will assist with application).
