General Manager – Hire and Supplies Limited
About the Role
Eden Scott is delighted to retain Hire and Supplies Limited to appoint a new General Manager.
Reporting to the Managing Director, David Chandler, you will eventually take on overall responsibility for the business when he retires, progressing to a leadership role as operations evolve.
Based in the Dumfries office, this is primarily an onsite position due to the operational requirements of the business.
This is an exciting opportunity as the company continues to grow and expand.
About the Company
Hire and Supplies Limited offers a comprehensive range of tool and plant hire equipment, including:
- Mini Excavators
- Dumpers
- Access equipment
- Power generation
- Forklifts
- Compact Rollers
Stretching across multiple depots located in Dumfries and Oban, the company serves a diverse client base across public and private sectors in Cumbria, South West, and Mid West Scotland. Products are also bundled with a trade desk for consumables to support existing customers.

- Equipment Management: Overseeing a fleet of equipment to ensure operational efficiency and readiness.
- Work Planning & Safety: Coordinating work schedules while upholding high standards of Health & Safety.
- Logistics Coordination: Managing deliveries, collections, and distribution of equipment.
- Team Development: Building and supporting five department heads, fostering growth, and strengthening revenue while maintaining gross margin management.
- Leadership & Strategy: Driving a shared vision and ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic direction.
- Safety Culture: Promoting a safe working environment where safety remains the top priority.
- Customer Relationships: Maintaining professional, high-quality interactions with clients, addressing any complaints proactively.
- Communication: Providing effective and transparent communication across all company levels.
- Financial Leadership: Full P&l responsibility, ensuring profitability and sustainable growth.
- Reporting: Delivering accurate reports to the board to inform decision-making.
Requirements & Qualifications
Essential Experience:
- Strong background in high-quality customer service, with a proven track record of delivering exceptional service in a safe environment.
- Experience managing high-performing teams at an operational or strategic level.
- Strategic leadership ability with hands-on execution capability—practised by "rolling up your sleeves" when necessary.
- Proven P&L experience and understanding of financial management.
- Budget setting, KPI management, and performance monitoring expertise.
- Commercial acumen and entrepreneurial mindset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication across all stakeholders—customers, employees, and leadership.
- Familiarity with computer systems and tools for reporting and operational tasks.

Industry Knowledge (Helpful but Not Essential):
- Prior experience within the hire industry is advantageous but not mandatory.
