General Manager – Specialist Service & Repair Business
Location: Rochdale
Business Overview
A £1.5m turnover specialist service & repair business employing 15 dedicated staff, based in Rochdale, UK.
With 30+ years of experience, this well-established independent business provides responsive, high-quality field service support for rotating and reciprocating equipment across the UK and internationally. Key offerings include:
- Service, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of pumps (all brands)
- Bespoke fabrication solutions
- Emergency breakdown support
The business now seeks a General Manager to lead the company through its next phase of growth and operational excellence.
About the Role
As General Manager, you will have full P&L accountability, reporting into the Senior Management Team (SMT) of the parent group. Your responsibilities will span all business areas:
- Revenue growth, cost control, and financial performance
- Service quality & customer satisfaction
- Health & safety compliance
- Team development & performance
- Strategic direction for operational efficiency and innovation
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Financial Leadership
- Drive profit-driven growth through existing and new customer relationships (fire protection, industrial, commercial sectors)
- Present financial and performance reports to ownership
- Oversee rationale P&L management for a £1.5m turnover business

Operational Excellence
- Lead service, maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations (onsite and workshop-based) for:
- Pumps (all brands)
- Electric & diesel drivers
- Control systems
- Ensure efficient resource planning, including emergency/breakdown response teams
- Optimise workflows for planned maintenance contracts
People Management
- Lead, motivate, and develop a team of 20+ engineers & technicians
- Foster a high-performing culture aligned with values: customer focus, professionalism, flexibility, and superior service
Compliance & Risk Mitigation
- Maintain strict adherence to:
- Health & safety standards (including Safe Contractor, ISO accreditations)
- Industry regulations
- Oversee supplier & subcontractor performance
- Manage stock & inventory control for operational flow
Continuous Improvement
- Champion innovative service offerings & process efficiencies
- Champion the company’s reputation for reliability and professionalism
Requirements & Qualifications
Experience & Background
- Significant experience as a senior operational or general manager in a service-focused engineering & mechanical business, ideally within:
- Fire pumps
- Industrial pumps
- HVAC or fluid handling
- Proven record of managing full P&L for a £1m–£5m business unit or SME
- Technical appreciation of:
- Pump systems
- Diesel/electric drivers
- Maintenance/repair processes (hands-on engineering experience advantageous but not essential)

- Strong commercial acumen, with a track record of growing revenue & margins in service-driven environments
- Exceptional people management (ability to inspire and develop technical teams)
- Sound knowledge of health & safety compliance in field service environments
- Results-driven mindset with strong problem-solving & organisational skills
- Full UK driving licence
