General Manager
Role Title: General Manager
Business Unit: Facilities Management – Small Works
Location: Glasgow, with travel across the UK as required
About the Role
Galliford Try is seeking an experienced General Manager to provide leadership within its Small Works business, based from its Glasgow office. This role offers the opportunity to lead a team of Project Managers, drive operational excellence, and ensure safe, profitable, and high-quality project delivery while fostering a strong company culture.
The ideal candidate will bring a robust operational and commercial background to oversee project performance, develop talent, and maintain cohesive client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of Project Managers to ensure high performance
- Establish best practices, compliance, and company standards across all Small Works projects
Project Delivery & Compliance
- Embed core values in health & safety, quality, collaboration, accountability, and compliance
- Maintain consistent project delivery standards, process controls, and compliance across all works
- Act as the escalation point for operational, client, and risk-related issues
Commercial & Financial Management
- Ensure strong cost control, forecasting, and margin protection on all projects
- Support bid reviews, pricing strategy, and risk assessments for new works
- Review and manage project budgets, cost forecasts, and CVRs
- Support contract administration and change management
- Contribute to annual budget forecasting for the Small Works business
- Provide financial reporting to senior management
Client & Stakeholder Relations
- Act as a key senior interface between project teams and Galliford Try Directors
- Strengthen client relationships to secure repeat and follow-on business opportunities

Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential Skills & Qualifications
✔ Proven operational leadership experience in construction or Small Works delivery ✔ Strong understanding of construction contracts, cost control, and financial oversight ✔ Commercially astute with expertise in managing margins and financial performance ✔ Ability to travel extensively within the UK when required ✔ Proven people management experience across multi-site or dispersed teams ✔ Exceptional project delivery, risk, and operational controls experience ✔ Strong communication and influence skills at all levels ✔ Ability to balance strategic oversight with hands-on operational involvement
Desirable Qualifications
🔹 Chartered status with RICS or CIOB (or working towards) 🔹 Degree in Construction/Engineering 🔹 In-depth knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts 🔹 Enhanced commercial and financial acumen
