General Manager – Steris Instrument Processing
Position Summary
At STERIS Instrument Processing, we are committed to driving excellence in surgical instrument sterilisation and Infection Prevention. We offer on-site and off-site decontamination services, coupled with instrument maintenance solutions, delivered through advanced technology and a dedicated team.
We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead our sterile services unit, ensuring adherence to highest quality, regulatory, and safety standards while maximising operational efficiency. This leadership role is critical in managing costs, resources, and customer relationships to deliver exceptional performance.

Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Leadership & Strategy
- Lead large-scale decontamination facilities through transformation projects, including:
- Service transitions, facility expansions, and automation
- Securing new contracts and optimizing customer service delivery
- Managing multi-site operations and resource allocation (labour, equipment, IT, finance)
- Ensure all production and service activities align with strategic business goals
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, driving Lean manufacturing standards and operational excellence
2. Service Excellence & Customer Focus
- Lead contract negotiations and partnerships, ensuring alignment with commercial and sales objectives
- Manage customer relationships, including Trust leadership, clinicians, and internal stakeholders
- Deliver timely and accurate management reporting, tracking performance metrics (e.g., defect rates) to meet contractual obligations:
- Aim for monthly defect rate (<0.25% for trays/supplementary items, <0.2% for overall unit)
- Implement QMS audits and quality management procedures
- Resolve customer complaints diligently while fostering long-term engagement

3. Risk, Compliance & Safety
- Risk Management:
- Maintain an active risk register, audit business processes, and manage crisis/continuity plans
- Align with Group DSM/IDM risk management standards
- Implement and monitor risk mitigation scenarios (e.g., fire safety, health and safety audits)
- Health & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with UK Health & Safety at Work Act and other statutory regulations (MDR 2002/MDR 2017, ISO 13485, RIDDOR reporting)
- Keep staff and premises secure, maintaining required first aid/fire safety equipment
- Regulatory & Quality Assurance:
- Act as Quality Management Representative for unit
- Implement traceability and recall systems when necessary
- Develop and sustain a quality-first culture across the unit
4. Finance & Business Planning
- Collaborate with finance teams to set operational budgets and profit targets
- Oversee weekly/monthly financial reporting for cost control and ROI improvement
- Develop successful business development plans in alignment with Surgical Income Strategy
- Ensure stock management is optimised while meeting production needs
5. Talent Development & HR Leadership
- Recruit, train, and retain a high-performing team, fostering employee engagement and career growth
- Own staffing feasibility and scheduling, including on-call and shift coverage
- Conduct performance appraisals, disciplinary processes, and grievance resolution
- Maintain payment accuracy, L&D, and HR compliance, including agenda for change
** preferred Qualifications**
✔ Senior Operational Leadership in banking, pharmaceuticals, construction, decontamination, instrumentation (preferably **healthcare/ managements). ✔ Proven success managing large facilities or multi-site operations with 20FTE+ (shifts, 24/7 availability) ✔ Postgraduate Degree in Microbiology, Clinical Studies, Science, Healthcare Administration, or closely allied fields ✔ Bristol Health & Safety Framework certification preferred, relevant regulatory qualifications ✔ Experience in ISO13485 (2016) and MDR compliance ✔ Food Handling Diploma or food hygiene certificate (Retail/Delivery preferred) ✔ HGV Category C availability (if covering client locations externally)

Required Experience
- Senior management experience (minimum E3/G3) in healthcare, life sciences, manufacturing.
- Strong background in a fast-moving, regulated environment with logistics, QMS controls, and adherence to policies.
- Experience working within a margin-driven model, balancing profitability and quality.
- Highly engaged team player with cross-functional leadership (finance, HR, operational).
- Cultural contributors – leading undesirable an environment of patient impact.
- Proficiency in Lean Thinking and data-driven decision-making is a bonus
Working Conditions & Expectations
✔ Travel: Occasional off-site customer and stakeholder meetings within 50 miles. ✔ Periodic European travel – up to 2-3 round trips per year for strategy discussions. ✔ Training & Disclosure: Mandatory vaccinations *(HepB) and blood tests. ✔ More flexible working model to support 24/7 facility operations. ✔ Daily VDU use, high level work and occasional minor shopfloor engagement.
