General Manager
General Manager – Facilities Management – Small Works
Location: Glasgow Office, Nationwide Travel as Required Business Unit: Facilities Management
About the Role
Galliford Try is seeking an experienced and commercially driven General Manager to lead its Small Works business across the UK. This integral leadership role involves taking full responsibility for the commercial performance, operational delivery, and sustainable growth of a diverse project portfolio.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader with a proven background in construction, contract management, and commercial governance. You will have demonstrated success in:
- Maximising profitability and efficiency
- Managing commercial risk while ensuring safety, quality, and client satisfaction
- Providing clear financial and operational direction to project teams and senior leadership.
Working hand-in-hand with Project Managers and senior stakeholders, you will strategically overseen projects to drive performance, ensuring both financial and operational targets are met.
What Will You Be Doing?
- Take full accountability for the commercial performance and profitability of the Small Works business.
- Drive revenue enhancement, margin improvement, and financial predictability across the entire project portfolio.
- Lead, develop, and manage a team of Project Managers, fostering a high-performance culture focused on accountability, commercial awareness, and operational excellence.
- Implement robust commercial controls throughout the full project lifecycle, including:
- Tender reviews, procurement, forecasting, variation management, cost control, and final accounts settlement.
- Provide strategic commercial oversight—challenging assumptions, implementing corrective actions, and ensuring strong financial governance.
- Manage contractual risk and opportunities, ensuring compliance with contract requirements and company procedures.
- Review and approve project forecasts, CVRs, cash-flow projections, and reporting, prioritising accuracy and transparency.
- Drive consistency and excellence in commercial best practices across the organisation, enhancing efficiency and profitability.
- Build strong relationships with clients, consultants, and suppliers, acting as a go-to contact for commercial matters.
- Support business growth by identifying opportunities, securing repeat business, and strengthening client relations.
- Ensure timely, high-quality delivery that aligns with safety standards, client expectations, and commercial objectives.

About You
Key Requirements
- Extensive construction industry experience, particularly in leadership roles within multi-project environments.
- Proven financial track record, with a focus on margin improvements and business profitability.
- Deep expertise in construction contracts, procurement, and commercial/risk management.
- Strong financial acumen, including budget management, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and project reporting.
- Experience in teambuilding and mentorship, driving high performance and operational success.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to align strategic vision with hands-on project leadership.
- Strong understanding of construction methodologies, project execution, and client management.
Desirable Qualifications

Chartered status or equivalent (RICS, CIOB, or being studied).

Degree in Construction, Engineering, or Business.

In-depth knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts to enhance commercial robustness.

Senior leadership capability in dynamic construction environments is critical.
