We're looking for a General Manager for the Chequers, in picturesque Walton on the Hill. This pub is a beautiful mix of traditional and modern. The front part of the pub has a number of nooks, crannies and spaces to sip on an ale, all of which have access to the bar which runs throughout all areas of the building. These give way to a modern, light, airy dining room and pub garden complete with bookable huts. The pub also has its own car park as a popular spot for visitors from further afield.
The food here is all about elevated seasonal pub food using the freshest ingredients, with a menu that changes throughout the year. The pub also has its own pizza shack for those that want to share and sip al-fresco. At its heart this is a modern community village pub, with plenty of spaces to hold all sorts of celebrations and events for its neighbours.
The perfect candidate has experience running a premium village pub, and is a people focused operator who maintains high standards and has a track record of growing sales by working with the community so that the pub becomes a reflection of them. There is plenty of opportunity to grow the reputation and sales of this beautiful pub.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
