Job Opportunity
WorkwithSchools are working with a local primary school, north-west of York, to recruit a General Teaching Assistant (GTA), with Higher Level Teaching Assistant hours (HLTA) and some Midday Supervisory Assistant cover. This role is to start ASAP, then permanent from September 2026.
Role Details
- Hours: 31.25 hours per week
- GTA: 08:45 - 15:30 (optional HLTA hours available)
- Midday Supervisory Assistant: 12:00 to 13:00
Responsibilities

General Teaching Assistant (GTA):
- Support teaching and learning by working with individuals or small groups of pupils under the direction of teaching staff.
- Support pre-planned learning and SEMH activities as directed by the teacher.

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA):
- Cover teacher PPA time or short term absence.
- Communicate pupil work as planned by the classroom teacher.
- Manage pupil behaviour.
- Activities include planning, preparing and delivering learning lessons, monitoring pupils, assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ achievement, progress, and development.

- Midday Supervisory Assistant:
- Supervise the playground area, playing fields, cloakrooms, and classrooms during the lunch break to ensure the safety of children and young people.
Qualifications and Experience
- Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- Level 2 numeracy & literacy qualification or equivalent.
- HLTA status or QTS.
- Significant experience of working with children in an educational setting.
- Good understanding of child/young people’s development and learning processes.
- Understanding of individual children and young peoples’ needs.
- Knowledge of inclusive practice.
Personal Qualities
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- A passion for working with children and supporting high-quality teaching and learning.
- Ability to work successfully in a team.
- Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people.
- Emotional resilience in working with challenging behaviours and attitudes.
- Ability to use authority and maintain discipline.
- Empathy for equality & diversity.
- Demonstrable ICT skills and the ability to use ICT as part of the learning process.
- Able to exercise discretion and judgement.
- Confidentiality.
