Senior Generalist Welfare Adviser – Macmillan Money & More Benefits Caseworker

About the Role

Citizens Advice Derbyshire Districts is seeking a dedicated and experienced Generalist Adviser to work as a Macmillan Money & More Benefits Caseworker. This highly rewarding role involves providing specialist welfare benefits advice and casework to individuals affected by cancer, helping them navigate financial challenges and access essential support.

Working alongside a compassionate team, you will help clients—many experiencing distressing circumstances—secure their rightful financial entitlements. The role plays a crucial part in reducing financial hardship and improving welfare for people during life’s most challenging times.


Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

  • Delivering specialist welfare benefits advice, advocacy, and casework to support clients across the cancer pathway.
  • Managing a range of caseloads, including patients at diagnosis, during treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life stages.
  • Supporting clients with:
    • Income maximisation (benefits, grants, financial assistance).
    • Mandatory reconsiderations, appeals, and tribunal work (including complex cases).
    • Navigating universal credit, pension credit, disability benefits, and healthcare costs.
  • Acting as a client advocate, representing interests in negotiations with various agencies.
  • Providing advice through:
    • Telephone and email communications.
    • Digital platforms (e.g., online portals, virtual appointments).
    • Face-to-face support in healthcare and community settings.
  • Collaborating with:
    • Healthcare professionals (e.g., nurse specialists).
    • Community organisations and partner agencies.
  • Maintaining accurate case records, adhering to quality assurance policies.
  • Contributing to service development, research, and advocacy campaigns to improve access to financial support for cancer-affected individuals.

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Essential:
    • Substantial experience providing welfare benefits advice and casework, including:
      • Handling mandatory reconsiderations and appeals (both administrative and tribunal).
      • Managing caseloads with deadlines and targets agreed with clients.
    • A deep understanding of welfare benefits legislation and complex financial support options for vulnerable clients.
    • Empathy and person-centred approaches, ensuring clients feel heard and supported—even in sensitive situations.
    • Proven ability to manage a balanced workload while delivering high-quality results.
    • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practices.
    • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, with a focus on clarity and accessibility.
    • A non-judgemental, client-focused approach, handling sensitive conversations ethically and professionally.
    • Strong IT and digital literacy, with an ability to quickly adapt to new systems and advocacy tools.

  • Desirable:
    • Previous experience working with cancer-specific services or within the healthcare sector.
    • Knowledge of digital advocacy tools and virtual consultation platforms.
    • Familiarity with Macmillan Cancer Support’s financial assistance programmes.

You will also be required to:

  • Complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
  • Provide proof of Right to Work in the UK.
