Genomic Data Scientist – Bioinformatics Consulting

About Genomics England

Genomics England is a global leader in enabling genomic medicine and research, focused on creating a world where everyone benefits from genomic healthcare. Building on the 100,000 Genomes Project, we support the NHS’s first national whole genome sequencing service, run the National Genomic Research Library, and drive genomic advancements across healthcare and research.

Our mission is to deliver the evidence and digital systems needed so that by 2035, genomics plays a role in up to half of all healthcare interactions, securing the UK’s position at the forefront of genomic innovation. By linking research and clinical care at scale, we accelerate drug discovery, diagnostic improvements, and personalised treatments.

Through designing and operating complex healthcare software systems, we enable breakthroughs that shape future healthcare—from birth to old age.

About the Role

We seek a Genomic Data Scientist to join our Bioinformatics Consulting team, collaborating with researchers and industry partners on projects focused on genome analysis and rare/complex disease interpretation. In this role, you’ll:

  • Develop and execute cutting-edge research projects, leveraging Genomics England’s datasets to advance drug target discovery, biomarker validation, diagnostics, and patient stratification.
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams to apply the latest genomic and multi-omics analytical methods, from scope definition to implementation.
  • Serve as an expert on our datasets and research environment, refining tools and pipelines for custom computational analyses and high-quality reporting.
  • Bridge open science and commercial research, ensuring seamless adoption of insights across diverse stakeholders—clinicians, industry, and researchers.

Everyday Responsibilities:

  • Data preparation for downstream analysis (QC, functional annotation, harmonisation, aggregation).
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to design and support project-aimed analyses.
  • Conducting ** custom computational work** on whole genome sequencing (WGS) and other omics modalities (e.g., GWAS, aggregation testing, meta-analysis, differential abundance, fine-mapping, Mendelian randomisation).
  • Scientifically advising on novel approaches to genomics/multi-omics data processing, benchmarking methodologies, and improving tools, including containerised pipelines (ideally Nextflow).
  • Publishing and disseminating findings via scientific papers, white papers, and conference presentations.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
