Location: Cirencester, Gloucestershire Salary: £45,000 Full Time: Monday to Friday

The Role
This role is the Geospatial Data Manager, who:
- Owns the company’s data
- Leads the data team
The one main responsibility is to: Develop, maintain, and take ownership of the datasets that the company uses to provide its services. This includes:
- Local plan data (allocations)
- Land availability assessments
- Planning applications
- Other data required by the platform
You’ll be accountable for:
- The day-to-day health of these datasets
- Understanding what we hold, where data originates, refresh schedule, and accuracy
- Setting standards for data sourcing, structure, and maintenance

Ownership of datasets provided to clients, ensuring:
- Accuracy
- Currency
- Timely updates on the platform when source data refreshes

Extending and introducing new datasets, including:
- Determining data structure and maintenance protocols
- Integrating them into the company's database

Geospatial data processes, covering:
- Validation and quality checks
- Root-cause investigation of anomalies
- Reconciling discrepancies between sources
- Resolving issues before clients face them

Technical data handling, including:
- Processing, cleaning, transforming, and joining geospatial data
- Managing boundaries, parcels, designations, and planning layers
- Resolving projection, topology, and geometry issues to ensure layers align and queries return correct results

Documentation & organisation of datasets:
- Maintaining records on source, coverage, refresh frequency, last update, and limitations
- Identifying areas with thin/missing coverage for prioritisation

Leadership & management of the data team, including:
- Assigning and prioritising tasks
- Supporting team development and performance standards
- Setting high benchmarks for data quality and processes

Contributing to the software platform’s development
Requirements
Essential
- Strong GIS/geospatial skills with: Confidence in QGIS and/or ArcGIS and proficiency in spatial data manipulation
- Solid SQL knowledge, including: Querying, joining, and validating large datasets
- Meticulous, quality-focused mindset, e.g.: Noticing inconsistencies and taking ownership of data fixes
- Familiarity with geospatial concepts, including: Coordinate systems, projections, topology, spatial joins
- Organised working style, e.g.: Setting/updating standards, records, and documentation
- Experience leading/managing teams (or readiness to), including: Delegating tasks, developing team members, maintaining quality standards
- Strong communication skills to: Explain data caveats and methodology to colleagues and clients

Desirable
- Knowledge of the UK planning and property sector, including: Planning applications, local plans, allocations, SHLAA/HELAA, Land Registry data
- Scripting skills for data management, including: Python (pandas, geopandas) or similar
- Experience in: Building or maintaining data pipelines/ETL processes
- Familiarity with data licensing, e.g.: Ordnance Survey, Land Registry, public sector data
