Training course Geoscientist (integrated degree) (level 6)
Hours Monday to Friday. We offer flexible working arrangements, allowing you to balance work, study and personal commitments. Working patterns will be agreed with your manager and will include dedicated time for apprenticeship training and development.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Review geological maps, mining plans, borehole records and historical information.
- Support the preparation of Coal Mining Risk Assessments and technical reports.
- Analyse geological, geotechnical and mining data to identify potential risks and constraints.
- Develop skills in GIS, digital mapping and spatial data analysis.
- Assist with the creation of conceptual ground models.
- Support investigations into mining legacy, mine entries and coal mining subsidence.
- Contribute to projects that help developers and planners manage ground-related risks.
- Work with colleagues and external stakeholders on a range of technical projects.
- Help develop and improve products, services and technical processes.
- Produce reports, presentations and other technical outputs.
- Attend team meetings, training sessions and site visits as required.
- Work towards achieving a Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship with Keele University while applying your learning in the workplace.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Integrate and critically evaluate information from different sources to test findings and hypotheses.
- Consider, appraise and inform ground related issues to multidisciplinary teams.
- Define complex geoscience related problems, a strategy to understand the problem and evaluate possible solutions. For example: resource scarcity, foundations, sustainability energy supply.
- Test geological models to inform and design investigations.
- Plan, conduct and present independent geoscientific projects with appropriate guidance.
- Consider inconsistencies and uncertainty and gaps in data when developing geological models.
- Apply geoscientific theories, paradigms, concepts and principles.
- Conduct and supervise fieldwork, geoscience mapping and laboratory investigations as appropriate and in accordance with safe working practices and legal requirements.
- Apply appropriate numerical, statistical, geostatistical and qualitative techniques in the evaluation of data and information.
- Utilise digital technologies, instrumentation and remote sensing for the collection, analysis and modelling of data.
- Communicate relevant geoscience insights to external stakeholders using different formats and media.
- Evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses and develop personal development goals.
- Plan and organise own workload and contribute to the completion of geoscientific projects.
- Collaborate with stakeholders online, remotely and in person, using appropriate techniques.
- Carry out geoscientific site surveys independently across a range of environments.
- Keep up to date with advances in working practices and emerging technologies and disseminate learning across the organisation.
- Prepare geoscience risk assessments in accordance with associated legislation for health, safety and wellbeing.
- Apply equality, diversity and inclusivity good practice to inform decision making.
- Produce recommendations that align to client requirements and organisational objectives that demonstrate the application of ethical, environmental sustainability and compliance with relevant legislation.

Training schedule
Training will be delivered through a combination of workplace learning and university study with Keele University. The apprentice will be based primarily at the Mining Remediation Authority and will attend university as required by the programme. Dedicated time for off-the-job training will be provided throughout the apprenticeship, allowing the apprentice to apply their learning to real-world projects and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to achieve the Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship.
More training information
Training will be delivered by Keele University through a combination of workplace learning, independent study and university attendance. The apprentice will be supported throughout their programme by both the university and workplace mentors. Dedicated time for off-the-job training will be provided in line with apprenticeship requirements, helping the apprentice balance academic study with practical work experience. The programme will be delivered over the duration of the apprenticeship, leading to a Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship.
Essential qualifications
A Level in:
- Any Geography, Geology, Environmental Science (grade BBB or above)
- Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Mathematics (grade BBB or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
You should be willing to travel occasionally for site visits, university attendance and training activities. Some fieldwork may take place outdoors. Successful applicants will be required to complete pre-employment checks and commit to completing the Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship.
