German-Speaking Project Management Director – UK Transport Team

Locations: Birmingham, London, Chester, Southampton, Edinburgh, Exeter Regions: United Kingdom and Ireland

Ramboll is seeking a German-speaking Project Management Director to join our UK Transport team.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced project professional with a proven track record of delivering complex infrastructure programmes across the transport, highways, ports, aviation, energy, and water sectors.

About the Role

You will lead major multidisciplinary projects from concept through to delivery, overseeing:

  • Project governance
  • Commercial performance
  • Client relationships
  • High-performing teams

Working across UK, Ireland, and Europe, you will take a leading role in coordinating with German teams and managing project delivery through our UK & Ireland-based delivery teams, while supporting global infrastructure growth.

As a senior leader, you will:

  • Develop and strengthen relationships with German-speaking clients and stakeholders
  • Contribute to the growth of Ramboll’s project management capabilities
  • Help deliver major infrastructure projects for public and private sector clients

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver major, complex infrastructure projects from inception to completion.
  • Provide overall accountability for:
    • Safety
    • Programme & cost performance
    • Quality, risk, and change control
  • Act as the senior client representative, managing relationships with:
    • Clients
    • Regulators
    • Statutory bodies
    • Key stakeholders
  • Lead and coordinate large multi-disciplinary teams, including:
    • Internal resources
    • Consultants
    • Contractors
    • Supply chain partners
  • Plan and manage design stages, ensuring:
    • High-quality, safe, and compliant solutions
  • Oversee procurement strategies (NEC, ICE, FIDIC, Design & Build contracts).
  • Champion HSE, sustainability, and customer outcomes, embedding best practices.
  • Prepare and present governance reports, financial forecasts, and progress updates.
  • Conduct project/programme reviews to drive continuous improvement.
  • Support business development by:
    • Leading client engagement
    • Managing bids
    • Developing proposals
  • Contribute to team & business growth.

Ideal Sectors & Project Experience

Experience in one or more of these is highly desirable:

  • Water & Wastewater Engineering
  • Civil Engineering / Energy Infrastructure
  • Highways & Transportation
  • Aviation
  • Rail

A preferred but not essential understanding of DCO processes and consenting.


Skills, Experience & Attributes

  • Fluent in German (verbal & written).
  • Proven track record in delivering large-scale, complex construction/design projects.
  • Extensive experience in project, financial, programme, and resource management, including:
    • Multi-million-pound budgets
    • Multi-disciplinary teams (often 100+ people).
  • Strong project controls capability, with expertise in data-driven decision-making.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and influence across matrix and non-matrix environments.
  • Highly collaborative, adaptive, and bold leader capable of:
    • Driving strategic change
    • Continuous improvement.
  • Experience meeting strict deadlines, targets, and quality standards.
  • Proven business development skills, including:
    • Leading bids
    • Writing winning proposals.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree (or equivalent) in:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Construction
    • A related discipline.
  • Chartered status (e.g., ICE, APM, CIOB, RICS, PMP).
  • Member of a relevant professional institution (e.g., ICE).
  • (Highly desirable) Health & Safety qualifications (e.g., SMSTS, NEBOSH).
