Trading since 1989, e.surv Chartered Surveyors is the UK's number one residential surveyor and the largest provider of property risk expertise and residential surveying services. To put it into numbers, we complete more than one property inspection every 12 seconds and employ over 600 surveyors from Land’s End to John O’Groats and Northern Ireland. This gives us the flexibility to offer nationwide coverage combined with invaluable local knowledge.
We're part of the LSL Property Services Group PLC which includes household names Your Move and Reeds Rains as well as the mortgage network PRIMIS. We work with lenders, intermediaries, social housing entities and estate agents in addition to private customers.
Role Purpose:
This role will involve building GIS solutions, products and Proof Of Concepts across the entire tech stack, to support property-related decision-making processes.
Main Accountabilities
Developing GIS solutions using a broad range of technologies including:
- Python — GIS development including error handling, file uploads, streaming responses, and use of geospatial libraries e.g. GeoPandas, Shapely, pyproj.
- API Development — Building secure, versioned and performant REST APIs including error handling, logging, monitoring, test coverage and adherence to and contributing to OpenAPI specification documentation.
- JavaScript / React — Building complex GIS-focused React applications including:
- deck.gl — custom layer configurations (ScatterplotLayer, MVTLayer, PMTilesLayer, TextLayer, PathLayer) with WebGL-backed rendering
- Mapbox GL JS / react-map-gl — basemap integration and custom tile sources
- ReactFlow
- Data visualization — Chart.js or equivalent
- PostgreSQL / PostGIS — Designing spatial schemas, writing complex spatial SQL, managing multiple databases and schemas, and query performance optimization.
- Docker — Containerizing multi-service applications with Docker Compose, writing Docker files, and managing volumes and networks.

Key Skills:
- Coordinate Reference System (CRS) / Spatial Reference System Identifier (SRID) concepts.
- British National Grid (BNG) EPSG:27700 and WGS84 EPSG:4326.
- PostGIS spatial functions.
- Geospatial file formats e.g. GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage, WFS, PMTiles.
- Web Feature Services.
- UPRNs,
- Land Registry datasets
- OS datasets,
- EPC’s
- Environment Agency datasets.
It would be highly beneficial to have experience working with:
- GeoParquet
- Azure
- Azure Machine Learning studio
- Linux
- Azure Data Factory (ADF)
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience working with GIS data in property-related fields, such as real estate, land development, or valuation (essential).
- Proven experience working across the full development stack and able to pick up an unfamiliar codebase and contribute quickly.
- Able to translate requirements from non-technical stakeholders into well-designed solutions.
- Proactive and innovative, bringing new ideas and proposals forward without being asked, understands the commercial fit of the teams work and how to improve the offering.
- Strong understanding of spatial analysis techniques and geospatial data management.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, Real Estate, or a related field.
- Experience in a fast-moving start-up style environment (desirable).
