Glaucoma Specialist Nurse

Opportunity: Part-Time Band 6 Glaucaoma Nurse Specialist

About the Role

An opportunity has arisen for a part-time Band 6 Glaucoma Nurse Specialist within St.Paul's Ophthalmic Outpatients.

This post forms part of a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to the assessment, monitoring, and treatment of patients with glaucoma. The role involves providing nurse-led glaucoma clinics within the outpatient department.

The successful candidate will act as a primary point of contact for both existing and newly diagnosed glaucoma patients. They will also contribute to research, audit, and practice development, and deputise for the Band 7 Clinical Manager when required.


Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working within an ophthalmic setting.
  • A relevant Ophthalmic Nurse Specialist qualification.
  • ANEX 21 (training post) may be considered to gain required competencies, with 75% of the Band 6 salary paid throughout training completion.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care

  • Perform specialist assessments of patients' nursing needs.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate care delivery using advanced clinical knowledge.
  • Lead clinical care by managing a patient caseload, including expert assessment, planning, and evaluation.
  • Organise and manage nurse-led outpatients clinics within ophthalmology.
  • Support multi-professional patient care with ongoing management and discharge planning.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and their carers/relatives.
  • Provide education and support to aid patient self-management.
  • Identify deteriorations in patient condition, referring appropriately when needed.

  • Act as a specialist nursing lead, collaborating with clinical teams, GMs, and Matrons.
  • Advance case management techniques to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Promote CNO Ten Key Roles (e.g., prescribing) within nursing practice.
